anyone have any specific metal file brands/companies they swear by? flat, round, etc...

Just went through some research a few months back and Pferd and Bahco seemed to rise to the top. I've gotten both and used the Pferds. Seemed to cut well, havent had them long enough to tell you if they'll last.

Bahco's had good rep but fewer places to buy. Got some needle files for xmas and they seem decent but havent used them yet.

Nicholson were very good, but were offshored to mexico a few years back and have fallen out of favor w/ the steel used being softer than the older files.

saw MSC carries Nicholson stuff...

never heard of Bahco..... it's funny you mentioned Pferd.. I had never heard of them before either till very recently.. was watching a new channel/guy to me, who uses some of their stuff....

but I also think the Bulgarian dude at https://www.youtube.com/c/MeanwhileintheGarage uses their stuff too....

i have a decent fresh set of small files from Mac that a buddy gave me.......

but while I have a bunch of older files in various styles obtained from who knows where, none seem to cut good anymore... especially the more smooth cuts... the one i need the most would be like a 12" "smooth" file i believe they refer to them as, as opposed to a bastard, etc...... maybe a 10" ... i also seem to like double cuts better than single....

what i actually use em a bunch for is fine tuning various material keyways, etc for the boats...

I have some Snap On ones I got twenty plus years ago in college. They seem to work well, but I have never had anything better to know if these were not great?

it's funny, THE smooth double cut that I use all the time is my bosses version of that.. like a 10, maybe 12..... old, still cuts damn good... i had the same, but it got stolen when my one garage got robbed back in the day... that's kind of the one I'm looking to replace...

for all the justified, high-price bitchin about Snappy, almost all the hand tools are hard to beat quality-wise... punches, files, chisels, wrenches, etc.... whoever's making them...

Blue Point is another story...
