What are you guys using to store your metal scraps? I'm using 5 gallons buckets currently but I'm looking for rack of some sort, preferably on wheels like most everything else in my shop.

Post up some pics if you have them

haha, this was just on FB...

this doesn't include any tube longer than a milk crate, or 4 x 8 alum/steel plate stuff...

ummm, 4 5 gal buckets, a 1/2 dozen of the long milk crates

and this is filled outside.... ;)

I tend to purge some to scrap yard every once in awhile, I think I have 5 buckets of pieces 24" or less. All the longer stuff in scattered in corners or under cars, plate against the wall.

File cabinet. They are almost free nowadays and were designed to hold a lot of weight. All the short pieces go in there and the long ones stand up against the wall next to it.

Brian, @bp71k5 made a smaller version a couple of years ago that turned out pretty nice. I need to do something sooner than later. I have the 5 gallon bucket disease going on and they are overflowing into my work path right now.

I'm gonna do a version of the red one except it will be for shorter than 2 ft and much smaller

the one short doubles as a movable stand for my wheel O' death...

I'd prefer something I can see without sifting through drawers. Just got rid of 28 filing cabinets earlier this year though....

Did you see those clean magnets on that red rack?!? :yikes: I hardly do real metal work and I can't keep mine from looking like a metal hedge hog. :doah:

Proof he's either OCD or doesn't really work on anything.

Maybe he'll chime in and I'm not liking the bucket disease either.

sounds like a winner

Mine is a 15 gallon barrel for gear oil, use them as trash cans and recycling as well. I also have a pipe box off a service truck in the shed I want to use for the 10ft sticks, one of these days...

Yes, they are great. I have several of the 5 drawer lateral files. They are real wide and a can of spray paint or thinner will stand up in them. I also have a 3 drawer lateral with a grinder sitting on top. I bought an entire trailer full of them for $20 from GSA. High quality HON cabinets with the safety so only one drawer will open at a time.
My scrap steel file cabinet is very loosely organized. Has things like "round small", "square big" or "tabs" written on the drawers. Keeps it organized enough to not dig forever looking for pieces. The rest of my larger steel cutoffs stand up around the wood stove since they cant catch fire, its kind of wasted space otherwise.

Here are the few I have but I use everything listed too. File cabinets, buckets, whatever works good. I have 3 metal racks. The largest handles 23’+ sticks of tubing.
