Michiganders and rustbelters...am I crazy? Solid shape K5/Sub as a DD?

Starting to think I'd like a bigger 4x4 as a DD. I love the Tracker but it's crowded with the wife and I and our stuff every day and we can't put our dogs in it (no back seat). So I've been thinking about getting rid of it and getting a K5, Suburban, or maybe something similar. Probably stick with a GM as it's what I know best(ish) but you never know.:dunno: At any rate this thread will involve K5's, Subs, etc.

I'm up here in Traverse City, MI. I still see K5's and Subs of the 73-87 body style in decent numbers and there's often several on Craigslist. They're around and it's not hard to tell the rotten ones from...the rest I guess we'll say.

Factors as I see it:

-Won't have a lot to spend. Several grand at most if I'm lucky. Say $3k ceiling ideally and $4k max if this year goes better than last. We'll see on that one.

-I'm in Northern Michigan but I have links to lower Michigan, Kentucky, and where ever any of the good souls on CK5 are willing to help me.:D:o However I think when push comes to shove, and since I'm not looking for a pristine beauty, I'll be looking to stay closer to home.

-MUST be 4x4 obviously.

-Would prefer either a diesel or a 87+ TBI fuel injected gasser. I'm not great with engines but I know both better than carbs by a LONG shot.

-Has to be solid. Mainly thinking in terms of keeping the wife and I dry and not being a rattle trap. Also mechanically reliable. The Tracker isn't pretty but it's all there, is mostly water tight, safe to drive, and starts and goes every day. I want that in whatever I get next but also able to carry more and go faster and farther (Tracker has no OD so it's not happy past 55mph).

-With any luck our house will sell and we'll be moving south, likely to Kentucky. I'd like whatever I find to be worth all the trouble to keep and take with us. If we still have the Tracker it won't be making the trip, it's staying up north.

-Going out west might be an option but at the same time travel expenses would have to figure into the total budget and obviously reliability figures in there. I'm also a bit of a old truck humanitarian so if I travel far and bring a truck back it'll likely be in really good shape...and then my guilt kicks in and reminds me it'd be my DD driving around in the salt that is currently coating the Tracker in a grey film.

So basically...how crazy am I? I want a K5 on a budget but don't want to have a rattle trap the wife won't ride in and I'm constantly worried about and that I have to fix floor holes, body mounts, holes, random rust issues, etc etc etc. I'm not afraid of a vehicle that isn't "pretty" but I've also learned that what you drive is sorta like what you wear, in a lot of situations it sets an expectation of you that many folks have a hard time shaking. I'd like it to run well and take me to work every day just like the Tracker does BUT also be able to take some of the burden for trips downstate and to town with the dogs/family etc. Can this be done?

Wow...rambling...

Blazers and suburbans are notorious for rusty floors and tailpans. The rockers are also known to rust badly. There are a lot of solid vehicles around but be extra cautious of any that have ever lived in the rust belt. The design causes slot of them to have rust issues in these hidden areas long before the fenders and quarters show sign of rust. These trucks have areas that are hard to clean underneath and a quick inspection will not reveal any signs of trouble. Crawl underneath and poke around, and I mean really poke around. Rust visible on the rockers usuall is a sign that the supporting crossmember for the floors and the inner rockers are shot. Also an area to examine the floor right in front of the rear tires, not just the spot where the tires spray water and debri on, but on the sides of that boxes section which is actually where the front seatbelts bolt to the floor, when I pulled my interior out of mine, my seatbelts were only being held in by the carpet. Don't let this scare you from these trucks, they are great trucks, I love my 91, so much so it's in the body shop now having all of it's cancer removed, just remember that what looks solid on the outside isn't always so solid underneath, my blazer only showed a few rust bubbles on the rockers below the drivers door. Oh, I love the 350 Tbi combo

personally my thought is DD and older gm trucks dont mix. In fact they are quite opposite of another. Hence why i DD a civic and have an m1008 as a toy. Civic obviously gets great gas mileage while im doing 80 all the way to work. Quick fast manuverable car for highway driving. The m1008 is obviously big slow and can go through anything, hence toy, around town driver etc. So to DD a big truck like this, i dont see why, i mean i would love to as well, but its not economical at all. I dont know how your commute or weather is, but living on long island, we hardly get deep snow, and the civic can handle anything else. The only time i need the truck for DD purposes is for deep snow. And for 3k you cant get anything great, i mean it wont be a rustbucket but i wouldnt depend on it for a DD, if you have something dependable keep it and save for something else dependable for when that goes. I just got my m1008 for under 3k and i still wouldnt really trust it on long distances, but this is just my philosophy

Just figure out how to get a southern vehicle and then get it rust-proofed. Wash it religiously in the winter and it should give you several years of beauty.

Or if you're more ambitious...
I always see clean 2WD subs and rotted 4WD subs. A little trans-tunnel modification is all that's needed for the swap. Then recover some money with the sale of the rusty 2WD.

I should add that I grew up riding around in a '76 K5, my first vehicle in '96 was a '86 K5, then lusted after getting another one for years. I've owned and been around as many fullsize trucks as smaller vehicles. Know all about the rusty floorboards, great looking outsides, and crappy redneck "work".

My daily drive is 11 miles each way and the nearest 70mph freeway is a 40 minute drive away. Obviously for regular use I need 4x4 and reliability more than super great gas mileage and high speed ability. Just would like OD and such for times when I want to go somewhere far away without leaving the wife driving a vehicle she doesn't like (the Tracker) or one she's sorta afraid to drive (Big Ugly).

I have considered driving Big Ugly but it falls short in the people (human and canine) transporting duties and the long distance stuff.

I hear ya on the washing thing. Part of the problem I have with the Tracker is I can't wash it at home here and being a soft top I can't just take it through a drive through car wash every week.

My '86 K5. Faces erased to protect the innocent, deceased, and silly.

I am looking to the same thing as we type. I want something reliable to drive along distance. My friends sister lives in Idaho and we want to visit her and do some wheeling. I need something fullsize cause I have a wife and two kids.

very nice truck. My dad had an 85 k5 before i had my license and i got to get my first k5 last year after having my license for 4 years. Well if i were you it sounds like you need a clean 89-91 (only because people seem to think they're better off the older gens stock and have injection) or any year of your choice if you can find an injected motor in it. That or the deisel full size. Go for it then, i envy you. my commutes 50-60miles each way...

If I were going to do that I'd at least pressure wash it and slap some chassis saver on it.

Then again if I lived in the rust belt I wouldn't DD my baby.. :doah:

Around here you see lots of older rigs on the road.. no rust.

I see one option that nobody has mentioned. What about this. An AWD Astro/Safari van? They can be found for around $2500 in great condition w/ less than 100,000 miles, seats 8(at least mine did-'96)and gets pretty decent milage. We regularly saw 430mi./tank and saw 46?mi/tank on trips to Kentucky/W.Virg. It was a 4.3l votec v-6.and they actually sell lift kits for them believe it or not.Not sure how quick I'd be to lift a mini-van,though. It would be like having a lifted 4x4 camaro.Kinda gay-ish.Food fo thought. We get fairly deep snow 2hrs south of you,and I know you get blasted in the T.C./Cadillac/Ludinton area. My astro van always proved to be a tank for us.

Not a fan of vans. I actually used to know some of the guys who make those lifts for them. Boondox Motorsports. Based here in Michigan. Neat stuff but not my thing.

I'm all about the cleaning everything and protecting what I can.

Dabba...that truck was one of those

trucks. Floorboards from the firewall back to the front of the rear seat were all rusted out and part way up the B pillar too. Radiator was full of what looked like baby poo. Leaked every fluid. Transmission shifted soft and the 305 was just wore out.

I'm not a "fan" of vans, either. But it would suit your needs:room for wife, kids, dogs, gear on extended trips, good mpg, good price, good in inclimate weather,drives/handles like a car, plenty of creature comforts.function over fashion.who wouldn't want to drive their favorite 4x4 as a DD? IMO,the AWD astro van is the next best thing.having the cake and eating it too.I always hated that saying!

Not a fan of their maintenance requirements. Also not a fan of GM IFS. Would like to stay with what I know. When I need more room than a K5 can give me I'll go for a Suburban (unless I find a worthwhile Burb first).

Go for the burb! i mean not good to wheel, but its 4x4 and its such a party wagon, so much room. and its GM, i would DD a burb if i didnt get raped on gas

I DD my K10 all through high school, through my first year of college, and since then workinging 45mins away, all highway in Boston up until I bought my 95 S10. DDing the K10 was fine and pretty reliable, but its not practicle to park everyday at work in the city especially since it doesn't fit in garages, not to mention having to top off my tank EVERYDAY before my commute.

So I bought a little 95 S10 shortbed 2wd 4cl, 5speed. For what I need the thing is perfect. I say you should look into some mid-later 90s S10s or S10 Blazers. They can be had cheap with 4x4 and they are pretty reliable and not a bad ride either. I paid $1800 for mine and its totally rust free and has been very reliable.

Hate S10's. More GM IFS torsion bar abortions. Too many of my friends have had them and their issues. Not to mention judging from the ones around here I think they rust more than the 73-87 GM's. There's one down the road from me that has fist sized holes in it.

If you can find a good running TBI Blazer I think It would be a good DD vehicle.
My 89 K5 has been a DD for all the 10 years or so I have owned it. No problems with it. Gets good gas mileage. Plenty of room. Comfortable on long trips cruses 70-80mph on the interstate just fine. Even with a 4" lift and locked on both ends.
I also tow with it a lot. I love to fish big water. Haul my boat all over the west. Lake Powell, Lake Mead, Down the the ocean and back.
I drive it often to visit my family. Its is a 700 mile round trip.
My K5 is a great DD. Sure it takes maint and upkeep. I dont know of any truck when used hard that doesn't. My k5 has been one of the best all around trucks I have ever owned. And i have owned a lot of 4x4 vehicles.
