Need good quality, but not too expensive---- like under $300....hopefully. Prefer digital.

Don't buy digital. Buy quality. Mitutoyo. Starrett. Brown&Sharpe. They are all good. The digital stuff is easy to read, but you better not leave the battery in it. It's really for production work, constant use.

Just small stuff----like measuring spindle, bearing diameters etc.

Can usually find some good name brand stuff used on eBay. I think I pieced my 0-12 complete set for under $400.00

But I would buy name brand anytime I can. They work better and last longer.
