military blackout lights and lenses

Ask around here or on SteelSoldiers. I sold mine for stupid cheap and gave away the rest. Threw some away I believe.

I want to say some of the surplus dealers might have them. Check Ebay.

small lights used for running convoys in blackout conditions. They're sheilded from the top, but you can see them from right in front. So you can keep as dark as possible but not run into each other.

They are actualy IR(Infa-Red) lights, When turned on you cannot see them at all with the naked Eye, You need to be wearing NVG's in order to see the light.

didn't know that. That's pretty cool... I've seen them up close before, never knew they were IR. Were they IR back in the 80s too? I didn't think NVGs were as big then. And I've seen them on real old WWII era vehicles too- those couldn't have been IR.

I was gonna say the same thing. I've been on HMMWV's, MRAP's, and Bradley's for the last 10 1/2 years and I could always see them with the naked eye. THEY ARE NOT IR.

On the wagon here too. At least, the description of the lights.

Some are bulbed, newer versions LED. The idea is to mark the corner of a vehicle (all 4 corners) with a dot of light (white (not clear) forward, red rear) that cant be seen in the dark further than 5' or so (Dont know the actual distance.) Thats why theyre called black out markers. The rear also has an upside down triangle which serves as a black out brake light.

There is also a "headlight", the black out drive light, which emits a small amount of light through a green lense about 1/4" by 1 1/2". To the naked eye - It wont light anything in the dark for a driving condition.

Couple these markers and the drive light with the light enhancing NVGs which the military uses, and suddenly, everything is very well lit.

Thats the non-technical break down anyway.

IR lights were used on M113s that I know of and Im sure many other vehicles of the era. Those, I've never actually witness in operation. Although as a maintenance mech, I do know how to check them for working - They grow warm when on (You can not see these lit unless you remove the lens) :doah:

I thought that this is what you were all talking about. This is the that emits the IR light i believe. I see them on just about every military vehicle around. We were always told that those ones where the IR lights anyway. Probably because it was a funny looking thing on the front and we didnt know what it did.

Then again we shoot things and blow things up for a living, we arent Mechs. Our only experiance was driving around in HMMMV's and saying "ooooooh" when we turned the IR switch on and could suddenly see where we were going.
