Im looking at some military surplus Mich tires, but Im not at all familiar with sizes..

Is there a chart, or a way of calculating what the tire width and height is?

http://www.militarytires.com/

Such as: 6.5R16, 9.0R16... I know there radial, and 16" rim... Got no clue what the rest would equate to...

Thanks,
Andrew

I'm going to line up a set of 12.5r20 XLs for my superbitch. I'd like a set of 335/80f20 xzl. But they are so hard to find and so expensive in comparison. So XLs will have to do.

No, because those are an old system of measurement and sizing. The first number generally refers to the width of the tire...but it's sort of a hypothetical.
ROUGHLY you can double the first number and add it to the wheel size and that's the height but that's not always true and again we run into the "reality vs math vs stated" issue with tire sizes.

That said, I know a 9.0R16 is about a 36x9R16. Very narrow but I know of an Italian that has run his on the stock wheels on his M1008 without trouble for years.

The 6.5R16 is SMALL. 30" or so and very narrow - 6.5" wide. Notice it calls for a 4.5" wide rim.

I had the 11.00R16 XL's on my M1008 a while back and loved them. Super beefy tires, very round and true, and a deal of a price. That said...I hear you have to be careful on the age of these and their condition. I got a great set but others have gotten some of these surplus Michelins and promptly had them disintegrate. No clue what the military did with them, how old they are, and why they were taken off and surplussed before you got them.

Thanks AJM, another informative response from you. Im still clueless, but I guess what you really need, is a chart showing ACTUAL measurments.

I think Ill stick with non-surplus tires for now, thanks for the info bud!
