what do you guys recommend to be a good mini starter? for price, size, ease of putting on due to where connections run and where solonoid is on starter. btw I have been looking at some powermaster sp?

Well, that depends on the money you are willing to spend. The absolute longest lasting, lightest weight, gear reduction starter I have seen is a Nippondenso. But, the one we bought for my buddy to run on his 454 powered 79 K5 was $350 or so. Easy to install, will probably not need to be replaced for about ten years at least.

I should also point out that it will start his 454 faster than the full size high torque starter that I have on my 4.3 Astro. So you have to weigh your options. When he ordered it he didn't even look at the price, he builds starters for a living so he knew how high the quality really was.

I ran a TCI for a while but the header heat dried out and seized two of the bearings in it. I also agree with the nippondenso starter being a longer lasting and better quality starter.

links? cant find one i like at summit for less than 200. i really like how on some of them the wire dont go to the top of the starter its kinda at the side, seems like it would make it alot easier to remove starter.

I got two of these at http://www.dougherbert.com/ recently. Protech is the brand, IIRC. They're right at $150.00 each, but are top notch and made in NC I believe. The store is similar to Jegs and Summit but located in Lincolton, NC.

Any starter from a 96-up 4.3L V-6 S-10 app will work. It is a compact gear reduction starter. You will need spacers or a stack of washers under the bolts, or simply get shorter bolts (don't get 4.3 V-6 bolts - they're metric). I have been running one for a year, and my buddy has been running the same one one on his Vortec V-8 for 6 years now. They're cheap, they seem to last, they're small, and they spin a small block with no problems

The factory gear reduction starter are good unless you do allot of mud boggs or water crossings. I killed 3 in one year from contamination. That's why I changed to a sealed mini unit.
