Of course, since its a Ford, it will pretty much shrug it off............:D.

Even so, made me feel like an idiot.

I had designed and built some control boxes for a fellow out in Texas to control some sample systems.
I didn't want them sliding around in the back and getting dirty, so I put them in the cab with me.
One on some coats in the floorboard, and the other on the seat.

I headed into town to work, and to ship them out this afternoon.
Its about an hour's drive to work. Part of it through the woods.

About the time I came out of the woods and hit the highway, I started smelling something.
Since the window was open on my side, I figured it was someone burning off some land.
But I kept smelling it.
Finally decided it was my truck.
Pulled over on the highway, and checked between the cab and the body. Occasionally some leaves or trash will slide down there and lodge on the cat, causing smoke and smell.

Nope, all clear.
Popped the hood, all looked OK there. Hit the highway again. Still had the smell.

It seemed to be getting worse. Pulled over, checked again, nothing. Did not smell like oil, more like wiring maybe.

OK, sooner or later it would show its self, so I kept driving, keeping an eye out.
Pulled up to my partner's house, parked back down the driveway a ways in case it burst into flames. Did not want to endanger his house.

It was a really nice day, not a cloud in the sky, so I decided to leave the windows down a way.
Rolled the driver's side down, hit the passenger side button. No move.

Odd, its a little slow, but has always worked. Tried the button a couple more times. No luck.
Looking over there, I suddenly realized that the heavy controller box had slid over against the passenger side door.
And it looked a lot like it was resting on the window button............

UhOh, I think I know what that smell was.........

Sure enough, I'm sure the little circuit breaker had done its best, but every time it reset, the motor got a little hotter.
I let it cool off and tried it. The window moved down about 2 inches and that was all she wrote.
Motor is toast.
Since its going to rain this weekend, I think I will got to Autozone and grab one. The website says its in stock.
Don't want to wait on RockAuto, even though they are usually quite fast.

Why the heck could it have not hit the down button instead of the up???

I would have noticed that.

That's always how it works. Glad your truck didn't burn down though.

On Sunday I had a length of lamp cord routed from the battery to my voltmeter as I've been sorting my no-charge issue. Just needed a two conductor wire to pierce the two leads into. All was well so I was going to go for a drive. Slammed the hood like I've done for the last few weeks while working on this, heard a hiss and the largest billow of smoke came rolling from under the hood. Got it open quick but by then it was done. Nothing like 900 amps on a dead short to take out a lamp cord.:haha:Voltmeter still works fine.

I need a new test light now, after I left mine on the radiator support when I was checking my altenator wiring on my pickup..(I was checking for 12V at both of the wires in the plug, because the volt meter on the dash showed a discharge--but they both had power)..

I got in the truck and started it up to see if the volt meter would go up ,but it didn't..tried giving it some throttle, and a gust of wind blew the test lamp's wire with the alligator clip into the fan,and the lamp was spun like a helicoptor blade for about 5 seconds, then it disintigrated when it hit the crossmember below the fan.(BRAAAAAAAHHHHPPP)... .luckily it didn't damage the radiator or hoses,or anything else..:doah:..the sharp awl point on it flew out and impaled itself in the hood insulation ...glad I was not standing there!..:eek1:...

Oh yeah...all it took to "fix" my charging problem, was a firm SMACK on top of the dash cluster near the volt meter...evidently the gauge has a sticky needle,or the printed circuit isn't making good contact......

At least it's not a hard door to have apart.

Nope, but there is one gotcha. They built the door after they put in the motor. So there is normally no way to get to the bolts that hold on the motor.
But they were nice enough to put in drill starting dimples where you have to drill the holes for the sockets to reach the bolt heads.

Since its been replaced before, the holes are already there.

I smoked a wiper motor out of my 77 GMC one winter day, when it had a thick layer of ice holding the blades to the cowl...the rest of the windshield was clear,so I didn't bother chopping the ice off, because I figured I wouldn't need the wipers on....

But while I was plowing,I must have bumped against the wiper switch, when I was using the plow's joystick control right under it...when I was on my way home from plowing a parking lot,I started smelling that "toasted electric motor" smell, like a burnt flourecent lamp ballast, and saw smoke oozing out of the cowl vent at a stoplight!..right away I checked the wiper switch--sure enough,it was on "high"...:doah:...off to the boneyard to buy another wiper motor!..so much for the "profit" on that plowing job...:(

You know I forgot about that. I think the window regulator is riveted in too right? It's been a long time since I've had mine apart, I had to replace the door because some bonehead thought they could back around a tree with the door open.

It wasn't my doing either.
