I have a 350 motor with a carter afb competition series carberetor. It keeps backfiring through the carb. The mixture is settable. Is it too lean, too rich or what? I need to get this thing running. Any help is appreciated. TIA

i know it's the carb cause the mixture screws got screwed up when i was putting it on a diff car

your plugs can tell you if your running rich or lean....

it was fine before i took it off. When i put it back on the mixture screws got screwed up. Is there a way to reset them enough to start it and than be able to fine tune it after that?

Screw them all the way in. Then take them all the way out. Count the turns it takes to get them out. Then put them in the middle. This should give you a baseline to start with. This should allow you to adjust it for fine tuning. Good luck.

When the carb blows up in your face it usually means your too far retarded. Get a timing light and check it.

Put a vac gauge on the carb. ( not the vac advance port the distributor uses, the other one), when you turn out the screws, turn them both equally, until highest vac is reached.

That's your best A/F mixture, according to the edelbrock tech guy I learned this from. It's never failed to produce a nice tune for me. Check the timing too.
