I found a 25' mobile home trailer for cheap nearby and was wondering if I could use that for my K5. I don't know much about trailers, this is my first real investigation into them. I searched and found some posts about people using the axles, but nothing about just using the whole trailer. The tongue weight was 5K and the overall load was 25K. It was a little too narrow so i would want to widen it a bit and make driver over fenders, but would i need to do other stuff as well? Do i need to beef up the outer areas of the frame? it looked like the edges were kinda weak. any other info would be great to.

thanks

It's really hard to guess at this without seeing what the trailer looks like. They don't usually seem to worry about the frame being rigid, because the box on top of it is rigid. I'm guessing you might be able to put a perimeter frame on and deck it to haul vehicles.:dunno: The tongue and axles should at least be wicked overkill.:D Just think real hard about whether it's worth it in the long run to put the time/effort/money into making that trailer work.

Thanks, I have decided against it for now. I don't really mind putting some effort into it, just not ready yet to trust my rig/life/other people's lives to a unknown trailer. I don't know enough about trailers yet to make an informed decision about whether it's safe or not.

I'll keep looking and learning...

Thanks

you made the right decision i bought one of those for my first trailer to haul my 74 1/2 ton, was even dumb enough to pay $1000. built some ramps drove my truck on it and it turned into a reverse banana :doah:all the tires went squishy, and i felt kinda sick. got the truck off the trailer without dying, and went and bought a 20' pj 10k bumper pull. much safer. only got $200 out of the other trailer. then i bought a '95 gmc 1/2 ton to be my tow beast for our move from fargo to virginia beach:haha:. looking back i learned a lot about towing that year. lucky nobody got hurt.

The issue isn't that the axles can't take the weight, its that they are for temporary use only, and really aren't meant to be used long distance/repeatedly.

You're not the first to have this idea, but really, i think its an idea to pass on. It would take more $$$ and effort than its worth to make a good trailer.
