What is a good compromise U joint for my D44? I want something fairly strong but they will be in stock shafts so I'm not looking for a way to find the weak link :D.

Keep in mind the compromise is on strength NOT price (though they usually go hand in hand). Also I'd like to support our vendors.

spicer joints. some of the best you can get that AREN'T chromo, etc. my d60 spicers were about 40-45$ each, d44 stuff should be 30ish id imagine.

Spicer 5-760x. Should run about $30ish and is the strongest stock ujoint available.

Is the Spicer "5-760x" the model or the size?

I haven't seen any reference to different sizes of the 5-760x in my searches and wasn't asked at the shop. However when I put them beside my shaft they look like the caps will go to the outside of the axles ears.

Though each of them look to be the same size I also notice each has a different number stamped in the center of the cross.

I'd just call the shop but it's closed now.

I'm assuming my axle is a '76. It IS a d44.

Asking this question is a lot like giving up your gonads! :D

5-760x is the spicer part number for D44 & 10b front axle ujoints assuming you don't have the really old school D44 shafts with the smaller 5-260x size ujoints.

I don't know the actual size (ie 1350, 1310,etc) but it is generally referred to as the original spicer ujoint in alot of cases which is "297" which is short for the original spicer part number for ujoints 5-297x. The original Spicer 5-297x ujoint was replaced awhile back by the newer stronger improved Spicer 5-760x.

Thanks Harley.

I will have to throw them in and see what happens. I measure using the calipers and it is a lot closer than it looks by eye. But I'm assuming there will still be some overhang. The diameter is right though. I assume that any other size u joint will have a different diameter right?

The other clue is that the PO included a spare 297.

I'm sure I'm on the right track...

260x ujoints are significantly smaller in all dimensions then 297's. The caps will stick out of the axleshaft ears a little bit. Like mentioned the ujiont ears will generally fail before the Spicer 760x does. A good way to keep ujoint failure to a minimum is to tack weld the ujoint caps in place in about 6-8 spots. I did this when I had stock shafts because the 2/3 circle snaprings have been known to work there way out. When the snapring comes off the cap comes out and that is the cause of most ujoint related failures.

I have only broken 3 axles. 1st the ears broke around the ujoint, 2nd the ears were wollowed out and about to brake, and the 3rd I snapped the stubshaft. All had tack welded ujoint caps and I never had a cap walk out.
