I have a 91 Suburban and the 4wd shift handle on it lays down aiming forward in 2wd.

My question is this. has anyone added onto it or replaced it with something that stands up a bit more? I am looking at building a custom center console and i want it to be above the console.

I haven't, but I have one in the back of my burb...just offhand, try reversing it...?

just checked (with my handy dandy protractor I bought in '88 for A&P school...), the rod has a 10" bend in it. If you reverse it it would raise it 20".

I'm working on this exact same problem. I'm not sure what I'm doing yet but when I get an idea I'll post it. Hopefully someone else has done it

apparently this is a common idea or at least a glimpse of a thought to most. I may see if I can nab an extra one at the local yard and monkey with it.

I've been thinking of a bent extention. but it would have a LONG throw at the knob.

That dont sound right does it :doah::haha:

Well it would be a long throw if you ADD to the existing lever. I am thinking get a spare lever cut it as close to pivet point or as close as I can that the shift boot housing will allow and bend up from there. May try and start with a ford lever from the 80s

I am thinking of addressing this same thing on my Suburban with a NP241 when I do the NV4500 swap as I prefer the shift lever to stand more upright like the NP205 shifters do. The route I was planning to look into was using a shifter assembly from an early 80’s to early 90’s Dodge truck or Ramcharger. They used the same basic transfercases as GM anyway where I bet the GM shifter stick could be used on a Dodge shifter assembly. Actually, the Dodge stick is decent looking where I wouldn't mind running the entire Dodge shifter and stick but with a GM knob.

This is how the Dodge 208 and 241 shifters look. Bet this could be retrofitted into a GM very easily. One of us should try this and see how hard it is to make work.

that looks good, IMO....may go on the "to do" list :waytogo:

So where is the pivot point on the Dodge setup? The pictured one looks more like a 205 setup where the pivot is cast into the adapter, and nothing is bolted to the body.

I'm as close to crazy as you can get without a straight jacket. i'll see if I Can find a dodge one this weekend. I have to solve this issue before I begin my center console build anyways.

:pimp:I have a welder and I am not afraid to use it!!

Have you taken yours apart yet? There's really nothing to them -

Get some round stock and make it how you want.

No, the Dodge’s are just like the GM 208/241 shifters where there is actually a shifter assembly in the floor, the Dodge version has the assembly mounted under the turtle shell. These are totally different than a 205 and more like our 208/241 setups which is why I suggested it in the first place

Here is a guy that used a Dodge shifter in a GM, albeit the shifter is out of a ’94 and later Dodge. Scroll down to post #115. Still pretty much the same shifter assembly configuration as the older Dodge shifters with the pivot built into the shifter assembly.

That's a 208 shifter in the picture. The 205 shifter is a lot shorter. It looks very similar though.
The 205 has a pivot on the adapter like a gm.
