Modified truck legality issues

Holy crap, I just read some of the "impounded" thread. Now I understand some of the harshness right off the bat. I didn't realize everybody was already riled up about lift laws. My appologies, I've fallen behind on CK5 current issues, final exams and all. Do I get points for being close to legit? :D

Using 31" (what they told me, I know it contradicts what most of the websites say, but a few say 31") I'm exactly 1.375" out of being legal. Cop didn't have a tape measure, but swore it must have been more than 4 feet. Not even close. I told him 3 feet max. On level concrete it measured 32.375". Still illegal, but pretty friggin' close :p:.

Overall I find it very funny that they would say anything to you. I live 10 miles east of Knoxville and see more rolling piles of junk on the road here than any where I have ever lived. With not inspection laws in East Tennessee alot of people drive unsafe piles of crap. Your truck look like any of 8 - 12 I see daily driving to work and home. Campus cops have too much time on their hands if they are messing with you.

simple easy way to solve all of this crap. 2 parts.

part #1 = state special safty inspection for modifyed vehicles from stock on steering and suspension.

part #2 = special drivers licence endorsement for driving such modifyed vehicles after a test has been passed.

but then tons of others will p!ss and moan. its the lesser of the 2 evils.

i got lucky......My headlights centerline is 53.5"

No fat chicks in the back or i'll be illegal. :haha:

Oregon doesn't have a maximum bumper-height law, but headlights can be only 54 inches from the center of the headlight to the asphalt. Also, the maximum height of a vehicle, with anything on top or loaded, is 14 feet.

Are you calling my truck an unsafe pile of crap? Cuz thems fightin werds ya know. :D I'll agree with you though, I have seen some scary crap going down the roads around here.

What you need to do is speak with someone who is familiar with transportation laws in your State. Police Officers usually aren't it. Here in CA we have a Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) you must have something like it in TN. I'll bet someone in the vehicle maintainance dept of your University would at least be able to point where to look. Have a school of law there? Somebody in business law might be able to find the info.

Finally I'm sure your library has the info. You might have to find and interpret it yourself though.

The other thing you need to look into is the fine print in your insurance policy. Most of the ones I've seen deny coverage for suspension, engine, tire modifications. I was OK with this for years and the local agent said it was aimed only at modifications that make the vehicle faster (i.e. drag racing). However, I recently had him call the adjuster and he says the hard rule (for Progressive) is that anything over 3" of lift is not covered. That includes suspension, body and tire. I'm just saying to be sure to know what you are actually covered for.

If a cop writes a ticket for an accident stating that your vehicle is illegal, that is probably fuel enough for the insurance company to deny coverage.
