Modifying intake?

Every time I cross a small pond, water splashes up and gets sucked in through the intake, thta small little hole a little higher than bumper level. I thought my distributor was getting wet, but my friends saw water coming out the exhaust when I was trying to restart, and it sounded a little wierd. Has anyone modified the intake to get by this problem? What damage will water do to my engine? I already checked the oil, no chocolate milk, so my rings must still be pretty good...

If you've sucked enough water through the air inlet that it killed the engine I'm glad the engine restarted. Usually you'll end up bending a rod or two since the engine is trying to compress a liquid. If the water shorted out the ignition and killed the engine there might have been enough time for water to get inside of the exhaust system and then be pumped out when the engine restarted. Hard to tell but if you're going through deep water it might be a good idea to relocate things like air intakes and other breathers to a higher level.

I guess your 90 is much different than my 79. What little hole are you talking about?

Our little models who still use the factory intake has a tube going from the air filter to the front of the blazer. There is a whole I guess maybe 6" wide or so right next to the radiator. This is where we get all of our air from. We don't run an open air filter like some of ya'll.
However I'm changing my setup to just the air filter and no tubes. This will some what prevent water from entering the intake, because the water will not be trapped next to the air filter. Confused yet?

I asked this same kind of question a few days back. I think I named the post "Proper Waterproofing Methods" or something like that. I got a lot of good advice from people, you might want to check that out.

The disels (I think) and some of the gas trucks (maybe) got some kind of air inlet that connected the same as the normal snorkel, but had a larger "box" that it connected to. It sat right up against the core support, and had a louvered opening that faced the engine, BELOW where the engine snorkel connects to the core support. I assume that reduces the velocity of air that enters at the front, and would allow water time to drop out before reaching the engine in any quantities. Or you could likely just remove the air inlet hose temporarily.

why not just drill some hole in the bottom of the plastic tube. that way the watter can drain out of the intake tube before it reaches the filter housing. this way your still able to suck in cooler outside air instead of warm engine compartment air. it might work.

I got a K&N Prefilter for about $21 from Summit for my 14"wide by 6" high K&N open air filter. It is a red foam thing that says K&N on it and the mud and crap would get on that instead of the filter. It's something that a desert prerunner would use to keep excessive dust out of the filter. I have a pre-filter on both of my trucks and they work fine. The other truck has a 12" high by 5" high K&N open filter. See my trucks doin' their thing at http://www.bigerik.coloradoK5.com .

I plan on getting one too. All the dirt that I see here in the San Joaquin Valley, plus when I start taking it out to the dez for the races, I'll definately need it. One racer I talk to every so often actually had problems on their first race cause all the dirt clogged their K&N. That's bad!!

Mine has the tube at the top of the radiatoor, probably the same as yours, but the airbox is pretty big, and if you look at it, you can see it sucks in the air from a really small slut at the bottom the the airbox.

Ok my Tbi has a round carb type filter and sucks the air high up in the front from behind the headlights not from below.
