Re: Exhaust 101! Class is in!
Damn Grimmy. Couldn't have said it better myself.
My example.... I have the stock "Type" setup Single exhaust 3" collector through the cat then down to 2.5. The previous owner had dumped the muffler and put in straight pipe. Well, I put my Thorley Tri-Y in and it sure sounded..well alot louder, not neccesarily good. But I was thinking ok, we have free flow now. We should be good to go. Wrong...Gas milage on a 31 gallon tank went from around 380 miles to tank to about 330.
After installing a 40's Flowmaster, my gas went back up to between 375 and one tank got me to 404. But that stalled me out as I was going up the driveway. Obviously my OD is not correct as the tire size is not stock. But the numbers are at least consistant.
You can relate exhuast back pressure to say something like swimming in a pool. When your on laps and you get to the wall and turn around you get to push off the way. Great power it is. And on a shorter pull you get to do this more often. But on the loner pools, (50 meter) you get the opportunity for push off half as often.
Sorta like your engine needing something to push off of. But Grimmy's explanation is much more accurate.
Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. This applies the the K5 and all other aspects of off-roading as well. Such as land use and the way you act while in the pressence of other people. So think about things before you jump the gun and spend a $hit load of money on something or carry a couple of kegs on your next wheeling trip. /forums/images/icons/wink.gif
