So my buddy just calls me and asks if I know anyone with high explosives.

(Yeah but no, I can't get him any.)

He and his wife have a '08 Kia Sephia 4 door car that I've complained about on here. Starting to think the thing is a lemon. Had some issues but I thought they were mostly prior owner neglect coming back to haunt them. Now...:doah:

So his wife drove it home from work and was in fact talking to me most of the trip. Never mentioned any steering issues at all. Since I'm generally their mechanic (:haha: I know right? Scary. :haha:) she'd have said something if it did act weird.

She gets home and he needs to head to the store. He gets in, backs out of the driveway, makes a left at the stop sign, and all is normal. The road he's on does a gradual, shallow curve to the left over a half mile or so. As he gets to the top of the curve and starts turning the wheel he realizes it's not really doing anything. Wheel sorta free spins a bit. Only by cranking it hard over does it turn the car and he has to expend some effort to do this.

Gets to the next turn and it's a hard 90 degree turn into the parking lot of the grocery store. This time it takes a HARD turn to the right to get it going.
However at the top of the driveway when he turns left it responds normally, he makes a quick right just fine, then into a parking spot.
Comes out of the store a few minutes later and now the thing won't turn at all. He can crank it around a bunch before he even feels resistance and says then the wheel stops cold like it's against the steering stops.

Ended up just leaving it at the grocery store and walking the half mile or so home.
I haven't seen it and he was in no mood to dick with it tonight. I should have more details in a day or so.

(Except if I wanted to watch him roll it over and burn it. I declined. Deadliest Catch is on in an hour and doubt we'd have made it in time.)

Cough.

Where's all the mickinick type peoples?

Does it have a sensor similar to a EVO sensor on the steering shaft? That would cause strange steering patterns. Darting, hard turning.

I have also ran into issues with tires causing strange steering (really hard steering, wandering). Something you could try is rotating the tires and seeing if it clears up. Just an idea

Got it back to his place today behind the back of a wrecker.

The culprit?

The brackets/flanges on the unibody that the rack and pinion body is secured to...
...ripped off. I'm a little stunned but sure enough...looks like they just sheered off at the unibody as the brackets are still bolted to the rack and pinion which is all the way over to the d-side of the system now.
Might have been the death of this thing as it's not worth much, going to be a BITCH to fix as this is in a horribly cramped and inaccessible area, and neither of us knows anyone who's a super great welder.
