More on axles: What\'s the largest tires you\'d run on 3/4 ton axles?

Well, the best axles I've found on a junkyard are a D44 8 lug front and a FF 14 bolt rear. Both came from a 3/4 ton suburban. They have 4.1 gears and the guy wants $500 for both.

I have a mild 454 and currently only have 31" (actually 29") tires. A friend of mine wants to buy my axles for his jeep (he pays $400 for my 10bolt+12bolt).

Should I do this swap? If so, which are the largest tires you'd recommend running on these 3/4 ton axles? I'm talking as large as possible but that can take a moderate beating.

i have a 3/4 ton with an 8-lug 14b SF and a 8 lug 10 bolt and i run 36"s, haven't broke yet.

For a D44 the max is generally considered 36's. The 14bff will handle just about any DOT legal tire. With proper upgrades (chromo axles, HD u-joints, etc) and a soft driving style I could see 38's on a D44. It all depends on the terrain, horsepower, and driving style. If you drive hard with decent power you could break the D44 with 33's or less. If you are conservative then with the upgrades 38's maybe.

Dude jump on that deal, thats a steal especially if you already have yours sold to cover the cost.
As far as tire size I wouldn't be afraid to run 38's or 39.5's.

Very true statement. If I had those axles and wanted to run 44's I would no problem. Sure you might brake something, but your not going to go out and wheel and brake something every single time. In my case if I dont brake something every time I go then I make it apoint to roll my truck on the way out...../forums/images/icons/crazy.gif

Guess what!!!!!! I called the guy today to see if he still had the axles, and he told me he just got a Dana 60 and he can keep the deal in $500!!!!!!!!!!

That's $500 for a D60 and a 14 bolt!!!!

There is a GOD up there helping me.

Thanks for all the comments. I think I'll stay with 35-37 tires. I don't want to spend on new gears. Hopefully the 4.10s will be in good condition.

With those axles and tire combinations you can be very confident about wheeling and have very little worry about breakage. Some day the Axle Fairy will leave a Dana 60 under my pillow and I will be a happy camper. Don't let that deal slip through your fingers, the guy is either trying to con you or he doesn't know the value of those axles.

Ask if he'll sell me a bridge I can jump off, or high rise or anything else. If I don't find a Dana60 soon, I'm gonna need it!

Mike, what tire are you going to be running, i ran 36's on my 44 all last year and haven't had any problems yet and thats with a lock-right and the doubler, unless you're gonna be running 39.5 Boggers i think you'll be ok with the 44 for awhile, if you drive like me, I try to drive elegant, instead of throttle happy. Slap on some 35's or you can have my old 36's real cheap and get that thing out to Los Coyotes next month, i wanna see what that 415 will do. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

I'm getting a set of 38.5 TSL's. I might have to drop them onto my d44/12b combo for a bit untill I can get an 8 lug front to match my 14b. Don't really want to buy a new set of rims with half 8 lug and half 6 lug and dont want to spend a bunch of money on converting the d44 to 8 lug and matching gearsets just so I can baby it. (augh! the thought of 3.07's on 38's is sickening, at least I have some torque to push/break the r&amp;p!) Hence the dire need for a d60!

Unfortunately, it was a D44. The good news is that the guy found me a D60 the next week...FOR THE SAME PRICE of Q4,000 or roughly US$500!!!

Great score! Wow, that is a find..........

I have seen two Dana 44's break with 38's recently...........in person.............and they were not in throttle happy situations, they were in muddy/rocky/snotty hill crawling situations. One with locker, one open.

I would just be happy if I could find a 60 forsale. i would pay for it, but can't find one down here in the desert badlands of NM.
