im finally getting to the point that i can drive my truck, but for some reason i keep having power steering problems. i have rebuilt 3 pumps and finally just bought a new one but it didnt fix anything. the piston or plunger or whatever keeps getting stuck all the way in the bottom of pump right where the pressure line connects. i can take it apart and get my power steering to work for about a half hour. then it gets stuck again and it wont allow the pump to build pressure. i thought it was the pump, but after trying 4 differant pumps im thinking its something else. does anyone have any idea what the problem could be?

no it hasnt got hot at all. sometimes it works for 30 min and sometime i can only turn the wheel a few time befor it quits. could something in the gearbox be causing the pump to do this?

I was gonna ask about the gear box........Is the pump whining? Have you taken a look inside the gear box? glittery fluid? play in the sector shaft?

the pump makes no noises at all. i havent really checked the gear box. the fluid is all brand new and i havent noticed any metal in it. what things should i be looking for when inspecting the gearbox?

Look for chunks and glitter. If someone else is turning the wheels, can you put you're ear close to the box and hear any grinding? And while they are turning, look for any up and down play on the sector shaft.

ok i will check those things tomorrow when i have some light. if it is the gear box what would be the best way to fix it? just buy a rebuild kit and do it myself?

is it still push-pull or crossover? hydro assist? are you just working the pump on hard flat ground without moving in forward or reverse for that 1/2 hour? tire size?

if its bad .Just buy 1 and throw it in. You can call rocklogic or benhanks racing, and they might have one all gone through for cheap........mabey already tapped for hydro assist.

Thats where I got mine for $200 tapped.

it is still the factory push pull setup, no hydro assist. and that half hour is driving it around on city streets. i normally run 35's but right now i only have 32" tires on it

im hoping that i find it is something fairly cheap to fix. im only 17 and i just spent all my money rebuilding my axles and puting a locker in the front.

could it be something like the return line is not letting enough pressure back to the pump for some reason and that is causing the pump to build excess pressure therefore compressing the spring and pushing the piston too far into the bore? this is just a thought, i really dont know if that is possible because i dont really know what all the parts are actually for

im going to try to put a inline filter on the return line or something. i was thinking that even the smallest debris could cause the piston to bind up in the bore. i will let you know if i find anything that works.

the return line is a low pressure line to begin with, thats why it is only held on with hose clamps. there is only two parts to your steering system. since you have tried fixing/replacing the pump maybe its time to start looking at the steering box. I wiped one out once. afterwards it would get hot and not want to turn.

tear it all out and go full hydro.:D
