So after two weeks of wiring gone bad we finally got her all done... Or so we thought. she ran a little rough after motor reinstall, twisted distrib. and she calmed down and smoothed out. with a big grin on my face i dropped the car into reverse, then nuetral, then drive. No clunk, shift, or anything like that. matter of fact, no movement at all. so I climbed under the car while father changed from drive to nuetral and reverse. little pin that goes into tranny moves back and forth like going into gear. but it doesn't. Any idea why? probably the transfer case? rear output yoke doesn't move, obviously. We have not a clue what it is. And rather perplexed..... Any ideas guys? thanks for the help?

check the transmission fluid and make sure that the t-case isn't in nuetral

if the t-case isnt in neutral and the shift shaft is moving but the transmission isnt shifting try dropping the pan to make sure the manual valve is moving with the shift shaft, sometimes the lever inside gets disconnected

Probably shouldnt have to ask this but did you bolt the converter to the flex plate? You said the engin was reinstalled so figured I ask.

So Come to find out its the front pump for the transmission went out or broke... Any ideas where to go from here? im thinking a shop fix is gonna be around 2400$ dont really know much about tranny drops. or even working on them for that matter.... Thanks for any help guys.

What kind of trans is it? rebuilds for the th350, 400, and 700 are not that bad, especially if you pull the tranny yourself. Should be in the 800-1200 dollar range (assuming its out of the truck and if you can install a motor youll have no problem pulling the tranny. If its just the pump, and you are sure thats what it is then you should be able to change the pump, its really easy to do. Just a few bolts and the pump comes out (still have to pull the trans though).

Call your local transmission shop and see if they can get you a re-built pump, if you cant get the parts yourself. They arent perticularly difficult to install. I would venture to guess that the converter wasn't stabbed in all the way and when the trans was bolted on it snapped the pump gear. Make damn good and sure its in. By the 2400$ you were quoted im also gonna guess it was a 700R4?

The last time I bought a trans was 10 or so years ago and it was a rebuilt 700r4.$450 with no core required from a local shop and that included a new converter.Remove and install is usualy less than $200.Not sure what a trans cost these days but the TCI ones are nowhere near $2400.Thats just slightly over the top.I rebuit mine and a TCI rebuild kit is $150 not including a converter for a 700r4.That was a few years ago.

Thats was our Local Shop. The nearest one i have outside that is a near 100 miles away. He Seemed to think it was the pump. not even as I finished explaining all that happened thats what he said. Also they dont do a removal rebuild. They do all the work, removal, rebuild, re-install. Thats why the high price im assuming? 6 hours of labor minimum....? 105$ and hours plus the part/s i figured no more than a 1000$. But hea said 2400$..... maybe just buy a used tranny from a pick-n-pull? I have a TH-350 by the way. What would be the easiest way to tell if it IS THE PUMP. take it all out and look obviously?....... :/

to verify if it is the pump, check the fluid level, make sure its full, then take off both cooler lines and crank the engine, if fluid comes out of the cooler line fittings then its not the pump, if nothing comes out at all then the pump is bad or the filter isnt installed, did you drop the pan to see if the filter is installed correctly?

not yet. hopefully tomorrow. just towed it back to my house today after that outragous quote. I looked at the pan and theres no drain plug... right? read around and it all just pours out when you take the pan out? ohhh boyy.

Taking the pan off is no more messy than doing a oil change just loosen the bolts on three sides of the pan then break the seal. Let it drain then you can carefully take the bolts out. 2400 is stupid high for a 350.

For $2400 Ill light my head on fire for your amusment while my wife gives you a hand job.:haha:Ya thats just a little high to say the least.

Stand by, I'm taking up a collection.........:haha:

One should be sooo luck to have such an offer. One should be sooo lucky to have a shop that doesn't charge prices like that. Welcome to my life where a oil filter costs 5X the amount in say Sacramento becuase we live in a mountain! stupid I know, thats what all the gass stations say. cough cough 4.19 a gallon..... cough cough. Going to take the pan off tomorrow, take some pictures, post them here. and see what you people of the K5 have to say about my continually breaking down Blazer. :) HAHAHA

I would try the lines first. Its less messy, and its harder to check the pump after the fluid is out or the transmission is out.
Just loosen them and bump the starter a couple of rounds. If the pump is bad, you will not see any fluid coming out.

dude if the local shop charges that much it would be worth it to take the trans to another shop. There has to be something between truckee, reno or carson city that can reasonably do it for you. I know its a little ways away but youll save a ton of money.

I had a 700 rebuilt a few years ago for $700 installed in my iroc. Also had a few rebuilt out of the truck with upgraded parts for $800. 700r4's are more expensive to have rebuilt then your regular 3 speed auto but they can still be done reasonably. Time to do some leg work and make some phone calls. :D

thats waaay too high. a t350 overhaul shouldnt be more than $1000 with kevlar clutches and a shift kit.
a descent 700r4 could get to $1500.
even driving 100 miles and burning up fuel would be worth it, if thats what it takes to not get raped.
there are probably 15 trans shops near my house, and maybe 3 arent rip-offs or idiots. choose carefully.
