I know it's not truck related ;) this time it's coming from the 04 scion xa I've been driving. It's a nice humming sound, sounds like I'm driving a freakin motorboat , LOL . Any ideas? Wheel bearing? I don't even know what's in the rear of these fwd cars

ttt! forgot to mention, sounds like its coming from the rear center of the car

Ben.... does the pitch of the noise change with wheel speed? also, louder on braking or acceleration? go down a straight road at a speed where sound is loudest and turn wheel left to right, does the sound change pitch then?

as I accelerate it gets louder and as i slow down it goes away, I'll try the other thing in the morning to see if it changes when turning.

also, the turning deal, you are basically putting a load on the wheel bearing when you turn, so you should hear it louder when you turn one way -loading the bearing- or quieter when turning the other way- unloading the bearing- (assuming its going to be a wheel bearing)

Ok. Did a little testing around a parking lot. A
When doing about 20mph and taking a hard right it does nothing. When I took a left turn I got the loud deep noise. Almost sounds like were driving the car with winter tires on the freaking thing.

road test has just proven a bad wheel bearing by the sounds of it also.

if you have a car lift like a shop has that you can use or barrow like a friends shop. lift up the car and have someone run the car up to 30-40 mph in the air.

take a screw driver and hold it on the knuckle on 1 side then other. like a doctor does to your heart. as you hold it hold the handle to your ear . you will hear basicly nothing or lots of junk rolling around.

and if nothing in left/right in front then its rear for sure. and fwd the rear just spin the tire fast by hand and listen.

i road test and lift test to be sure when i get them.
