Motor bogging out after 3rd gear shift

1981 k5 w/'78 35O/TH350

Grr I'm just having one of those days. I get pulled over today, the truck I was going to buy has a bent frame, I found out that my whole tailpan is rotted out on my '81 and I got sold the wrong parts at the store.

The thing thats really pi$$ing me off is my truck is running like $hit. When it gets warmed up it starts to bog out and loose all guts in third gear. It kinda feels like someone dropped half the clyinders or cut back the fuel. The wrong part I got was the fuel filter but when I pulled it looked pretty clean. If I drop it into second and rev it up and throw it back into third it runs fine. It'll do it if I'm crusing and have to slow so it goes to second and then I speed up and it'll do it as soon as it shifts, even with mild acceleratoin. Even when I gun it right of the start it'll be fine for a little bit before it dumps out. I don't if this helps but the transmission is freshly overhauled and the truck has worked fine for 2 weeks after I got it running after sitting for over a year.

Just being a pest and bringing this up top because this is driving me nuts. If I can't get this resolved it'll probably be the end of the truck because its in real bad shape.

Sounds like a carb or timing issue issue. Distributor problem maybe??

Wish I could help you more, but it could be a few things.

Do you have a timing light? I would check it, and then rev the engine up until the problem happens and see if the timing is doing anything funky.

If the timing is ok, what kind of carb do you have? Try disconnecting the choke to see if that makes a difference.

I'm starting to calm down here and think more rationally now. The thing does have 2.73 gears with 32" tires and I'm sure thats doing me any favors. Not my doing and I'll be going back to stock tires. I know, I know, but its only my winter truck and I think if I sneezed while driving I'll fall through the floor. The thought of timing and the advance had cross my mind. The carb is rather weak, (stinks to hell and leaks) I think I'll rebuild that. It'll only do it going into third gear and just started today. It was doing only ocassionally at first but now its doing the majority of the time.

Do you have vacuum advance? My truck started running like c*ap a couple of weeks back, like the carb wasn't getting enough fuel, and the 1st to 2nd &amp; 2nd to 3rd shifts were hitting hard. Took off the air cleaner and started looking at things, and saw that I had two vacuum lines (vacuum advance &amp; something else-emissions garbage I think) unhooked. Must have come loose from abuse the weekend before. Anyway, plugged the lines in, and the truck works fine now. Simple things are the hardest to find.

I got to thinking about that too. Its all hooked up but it could be that the adavance could be sticking and I need a high rpm to pull it free.
