Started a new project today. Got an '82 Vision from a buddy (only made for two years). I went back and forth with him about it a month ago or so and finally walked away. He called last week and asked if I was still interested. My truck was in pieces and not driveable so I said no. His response was "I'm extremely flexible on price and delivery at this point". So why not? :haha:

The plan at this point is to redo all the lighting, rebuild the carbs, and possibly hack the tail off and replace it depending on how I feel. My legs are long enough that I'm a little cramped, so I'd like to mount a new seat a bit higher up on it. I've seen a Buell XB9 seat transplant that turned out quite nice and got rid of a lot of the 80's econobox look.

I'd also like to do a new exhaust, but the OE exhaust is pretty goofy, and I'm not sure I could pull it off without way too much work.

Anyway, I started on some of the teardown today. Terrible cell phone picture 5 minutes after I shoved it in the garage:

I think it needs flowmaster 40's on it.

If I redo the exhaust I'm probably actually going to be running an automotive glasspack. Once you slap "motorcycle" in front of any part, the price is automatically multiplied by 10.

I'm also up for suggestions on fender and tank color. They both need fresh paint and I don't know if I want to keep them black or not.

And if it says HD its another hundred dollar...

you impartial to Reds?

I'm gonna repaint mine (98 fatboy) to a darker red color, yet to be determined.

I like oranges over reds but with brighter colors it depends a lot on the shade. I was actually thinking of a copper metallic or a silver.

EDIT: Or I could do a throwback to my original wheeling rig and paint it Allis Chalmers orange. :haha:

Better idea of what I'm working with. New headlight brackets arrived today. Should make the black 7" headlight look pretty good. Trying to figure out what I want to do to replace the gigantic 80's signals on the front end.

It was a runner before the carbs were pulled for a rebuild. I'm planning on replacing the grip/throttle assembly while it's apart since the OE one is in pretty bad shape. Once everything is said and done I hope to have $1k or less into it (including purchase price) depending on what I can scrounge up.

Looks like a nice find :thumb:

The old man had a 82 550 XJ, great bike. Before he sold it he put some universal cobra slip on's on it. I believe they were around $150 for the pair. Sounded pretty good as well.

Made a little progress on this thing. Cut down the front fender, made new rad. side guards so I don't have to pull them in order to get the cap off. Also mounted up a new 7" headlight. I like the look of it.

Fender is the color testing guinea pig right now. Not looking like I'll go with orange.
