Okay, I know there have probably been 100+ threads about this, but I'm trying to put my Cobra 29 where the stock stereo goes. I've got the dash cut so it will fit, but the only thing I'm concerned about is how I'm going to support it in the dash. Since it's not like a head unit and doesn't have the sleeve with the little tabs on it. Has anyone done anything like this? If so, what did you do to keep the CB in place and stable?

Also, for those of you with your stereo's mounted in your dash vent, how exactly do you cut the vent out in the back if you have factory heat?

I mounted a CB in my brothers Toyota in the factory radio location. I had to build a bracket to hold it, so I would suggest getting out the measuring tape.

Here is mine in my truck.

I have my radio in the factory location and my CB is mounted to the console between the console and the drivers bucket seat.

Readymix, I think I have that same exact CB :thumb:

I did it. I made a T shaped bracket that is mounted with 3 legs to the metal that forms the knee knocker of the dash (under the radio) and I used the CB bracket to bolt to the T bracket I made. It was kind of a pain in the ass due to the compound angles of the dash.

I still need to make a face plate to cover the ugly ass hole I cut out of the dash

Hmm. That sucks because my CB didn't come with a mount. Do you have any pictures of what you did by any chance?

well, I had a perfect pic around somewhere of the heat duct removed, showing how it had to be modded, but alas I can't find it..

basically you have to lower the top wall of the duct.. mine was done already.. the guy glued in 2 sides and a new "top".. all about an inch lower than it was.. cut out a piece like the size of a vcr tape.. it cuts the duct size in 1/2 or so, but didn't seem to affect it much...

if I come across that pic, I'll post it.. I actually may still have the old, modded duct around somewhere..

I just don't see how/what you get in there to cut with. Unless I just took the glove box out and slid that whole vent box out and modified it outside the truck. I just don't wanna cut too much, and I don't wanna have heat just dumping back there. Even though not much air flows through those anyway.

I cut mine with a sawzall and added some duct tape to fix the hole I made.
I did not cut enough though so the back of the radio hits the duct.
I may fix it someday but I doubt it.

You just stuck a sawzall in your dash and started cutting away? I know if I try that, I'll hack wires and all kinds of crap. I guess I'll just slide it out through the glove box and cut it. Then I'll use duct tape as you stated, to patch the hole.

Now really my only problem is getting the cb to mount in the stereo location without falling out and tearing up my new dash bezel ;)

The other thing I'm worried about is sound output of the CB. Having it mounted in the dash, I figure the speaker will probably be pretty muffled. Since my Jimmy doesn't have a stock center dash speaker (for some reason it's not there), I thought about just sitting a 6x9 in there and wiring it to my CB.

What have you guys done?

I removed the duct then cut it. If you are mounting it int he factory radio location you won't need to do that.
As far as the speaker, yes it will be muffled. I took two 3.5" 4Ohm speakers and wired them for the 8Ohm load required by the CB. Then I mounted them in the center speaker location. Easy and free.

I do not have any pics of my mount but I can try to get some.

I took an old subwoofer from a PC set of speakers and mounted mine in the center speaker spot and it works fine. Gotta make sure you get the proper ohm load
