We are supposed to get 4 inches of snow this weekend and I was supposed to work on my truck in the drive way. Now I have to figure out how to move it to my buddies shed? It is a 350/350/203. The transfer case is out of it. Can I just pull it with a chain?

If the transfer case is out, I would imagine the driveshafts are removed as well :)

That being the case, you should be just fine moving it however you want.

if tranny still in make sure its supported good . and also if tranny still has fluid in it the movment might splash the fluid to the back and a/ out all over the place .

and don't use chains anymore . go for a strap . a lot softer and safer .

What would be a good way to support the tranny? I could put the adapter and crossmember back in but that would kinda be counter productive

that would be best if you want 99% sure its good .

otherwise support under tranny pan to frame rails and secure that all down good .

How far? A stout ratchet strap around frame rails and under trans can help support temp. Just don't crank the piss outa a big binder.

The crossmember is pretty easy to throw back in.

Id go that route.

Just be sure you have a good plan to stop it before you start pulling it with a strap....

Thanks for posting this thread, im about to have to move mine, the tranny and tranfer case along with the drive shafts are out, would it be safe to move it to a new house without any support under the engine? iv had a floor jack under it for a year now.. i heard that without that support it would fall back and crack the distributor.

The distributor will hold the weight, just let it down easily.

Unless I'm reading that wrong, he wants to tow the truck around with nothing but the distributor holding the motor in place (obviously motor mounts lol).

Perhaps if the motor mounts were extremely stout, but the distributor is already pretty close to the firewall, and if there is nothing keeping the motor from moving, isn't it likely that more than just a cracked cap would happen with the truck going down the road?

I just envision some worn out rubber mounts letting the motor rock forward and backwards as the vehicle slows down, speeds up, and hits bumps, repeatedly slamming the distributor into the firewall.

What would hit if you just pull the distributor?

Probably nothing. But, id think it would wreck your motor mounts, if not break them.

Really putting them under stress in a different manner than designed.

How about just installing the T-case and driving? But based on the question, I assume it isn't running for other reasons as well.

Even parked in the garage, leaving the tranny hanging off the engine with only motor mounts will at least knock the distributor cap off, if not break it or do more damage to the dizzy. For pulling the vehicle around, I would absolutely support the back of the transmission. It really isn't much work to install the crossmember (4 bolts) and connect the transmission mount (2 or 4 bolts).

I think the issue is....if the trans is out, do you have to support the motor?

I think the answer is yes, but not sure how.

you guys rock, thanks for the suggestions, i think im going to attempt to install a new (used) tranny before the move so perhaps i can just drive it to the new house, oh what a happy day that would be. hehe. sorry if i kinda jacked the thread with the question.
