Moving the ected

im converting my k5 to 3/4 ton and i have a auburn "ected" out back in the 10 bolt, and i would like to swap the "electric slipper" to the front.
can that be done out in the garage with average tools and motivation or is this better off left going to a shop job.

You're probably changing gear ratio's too, right?

Regardless, yeah, you really do need the right tools to do this right. Its one of those things that, if done incorrectly, will probably destroy everything in the diff.

no im keeping the gear ratio, i was hoping i could just measure the shims in front and wrench away.

I don't think it would be that difficult to swap it in, but I would make sure you have a dial indicator and magnetic base to check backlash before taking the front apart so as to set it back to same. Keeping the shims in same location should be very close if not dead on, but verification is always best. You can save a fair amount of money doing it yourself and possibly pay for the tools you would need to buy several times over.

Awesome thats what i needed to hear. Once i get the 14 bolt in, ill update you guys on how i modified/destroyed my front diff haha

The only tool you'll need is a dial indicator and mag base to check the backlash. The pinion depth settings will not change as long as you keep the same gear set in the front axle.

You will need to get a new set of carrier shims to properly set the BL.

i just cant reuse the shims huh? so ill need setup bearings too?
how much are carrier shims generally.

If your front axle is set up from the factory then you will need new shims.
From the factory there will only be one shim per side that is the size required for that specific carrier.

The carrier shim kits are not that much $$. Just call Randy's Ring and Pinion and they get the kit out to you.
