So guys im about to move to Elmendorf Alaska. Moving from Germany. so had a few questions, my k5 is in Columbia Missouri, any body know any good shipping companies? not sure if i should ship it to Alaska or just ship to Washington then use the Ferry for the last part to save some coin.... also anybody know any Off road clubs/spots? I am almost done (hahaha :haha: ) building my rig time to get some use out of it. As Always Thank you very much Sandypants:waytogo:

i've been using this company lately:

http://mallorygroup.com/

as far as i can tell, they are a broker, and their rates are excellent. they will move whatever you need moved, cheaper than any other freight company that i've ran into.

Check these folks out too:

They shipped my K5 from CA to VA in 3-4 days for $1k. They also were SUPER professional, even though I changed the pickup date no less than 7 times, once when they had the truck waiting to pick up the K5!

They are - I think - *the* top rated service in the US.

Cant help ya with the vehicle shipping, but yeah there is a decent alaska forum. Alaska4x4 I believe. We have quite a few members here. YellowK20 is the first name that comes to mind.

shipping from WA to AK can be spendy by barge. Last time it was 1-1.2K I believe. The port it goes out from is in Tacoma.

doesn't the military usually pick up the tab to get vehicles moved in these sort of situations?

Military only pays for 1 vehicle, and will not ship anything with more than 4" lift.

Alaska Marine Lines is a great shipping company, I saw pickups strapped to flatbeds all the time coming up from the lower 48.

The Alaska State Ferry isn't much of a savings. A one way trip from Bellingham to Haines is around $800 last I heard, then you still have 400 miles to go by road. Although you can take the ferry to Whittier and be only 70 miles from Anchorage, but that will put you over a grand. But all that is passage for you and your car, anything else costs more. Getting stuff to and from Alaska is just expensive.

I just did a road trip from Fairbanks to Washington towing a trailer, and averaging 13mpg, it cost me $1250 approx. to go the 2400 miles. That doesn't include food or hotel rooms, though this time of year is nice enough to camp out along the way, that's one nice thing about Canada, any pullout is legal camping.

I be over there too. Alaska4x4network.com Just register and your in. A lot a lot like here. Very chill with lots of good info. Read the rules. Absolutely no posting locations of trails!! Join there and I'm sure you can get a bunch more info with your questions. Good luck and we'll see you soon?

Never had the use a transport company but your transportation office should be able to give you a referral for a Company to move your rig.

Like Z71 said, the military will only ship one vehicle over-seas and vice versa, back to the states. But they will pay mileage for two vehicles if you're married.
