I'm starting pre-planning on maybe installing multi-port fuel injection in my K5. Curious on peoples' thoughts and experience? I'm talking about kits along these lines where you swap in a new intake. My TBI conversion is doing okay, but I'm always a little worried about the ancient computer and the fact I have no idea how I tuned it the first time 15 years ago. I don't want something unreliable or that will be a huge frustration to install though.

Everybody seems to like this one here, I don't think you can go wrong with that.
Personally I like to stick with oem for reliability

I have ProFlo4 on a 454. Runs good and the install was easy. Instructions were actually good. Running an EP381 pump on the stock 1990 in tank sender. ProFlo4 comes without a coil for some reason, I am using a MSD blaster 2 coil.
My setup came from @folkenheath and has his tornado mod installed.

You really think 30+ year old stuff is more reliable? Honest question. In my case I was originally carb and have sort of a frankenstein thing going on without all the sensors, etc. If the computer breaks, I can't just drop in a factory replacement.

I started down the road of running TBI on the 454 swap. With a cam in there it was going to require some programming. I changed plans and went aftermarket and am happy I did. TBI is fine in my stock trucks but anything modified should move beyond TBI. The ProFlo4 is very tuneable and has good support from the manufacturer which I have never needed.

I always start with a stock setup and then if I need new parts I can get them anywhere.

my pro flo 4 is still going even tho its not a daily driver . and got 60 miles last year .

looking back i wish i had just done a LS or 8.1 swap and been done with it . the L31 vortec gm long block is nice and works well with the pro flo 4 .

i like the live tuning you can do on it over other units . that need cord and upload / down load and bla bla bla .

Why would you put a pro flow on an LS? Wouldn't the factory injection be decent enough?

He put the proflo4 on the L31 crate engine that he bought new.
He didn't have the original induction system and the L31 is first generation vortec, not technically an LS so limited programming options

Yep 96-03 sbc vortec motor . NOT a LS based motor . And i am in same group . Why aftermarket a stock system that can be tuned and more reliable in my opinion .

what engine and mods are you working with?

I really like the bro flow setup but the main reason for the switch from OEM was the increased tuning flexibility with engine mods.

Nothing significant, "RV cam", headers, bigger exhaust, larger injectors. Also, EGR delete and electric fan control. I have mostly a factory TBI setup, but no EGR and no TPS.

What I have is the EBL system from DynamicEFI. It's a modified GM computer that allows real time tuning and some other things. The owner recently died and I haven't touched the system in 15 years. I'm waiting for the day when something goes wrong and I'm basically on my own with this nearly one-off setup.

Most unreliable vehicle I've had was an 88 TBI Chevy lol.
Second most unreliable was a 95 6.5 diesel Chevy .

Those were the only 2 that left me stranded and wouldn't run more than once anyway.
And both were multiple times
:dunno:
I'd do a pro flo if I had the coin.
I can buy, rebuild, and upgrade a 5.3 LS for the same cost as just that kit though :doah:

You tbi suburban was a fluke, normally tbi is pretty reliable.
The 6.5 diesel is a toss-up, some run great forever and some are nothing but trouble

If the ECU dies, on your almost TBI setup, it could be replaced by something like a Microsquirt.

This is where my head goes. You could bring in an electronic transmission at the same time and tune the shift points as well. I don't think there is a more reliable setup than maybe mid-2000's stock. At least for now, the parts are everywhere.

I'm not at all opposed to an LS swap, but I'm thinking how many rabbit holes I'd end up down. Motor and trans mounts, new driveshafts, T-case adapters (?), misaligned shifters, all the emissions stuff that I need to obtain or it will throw codes, and on and on. And that's after I find a suitable donor and maybe do a rebuild.
