Thinking about getting a blazer or truck that will get good mpgs for commuting to work. I want a 2wd that i can put a high rear end in. How high can i go? Itd be mostly hwy driving but some city driving. What engine will get the best mpg? 6.2, 6.5, 6.5 turbo? Or another diesel? If i have to rebuild an engine are their any tips for building a diesel for max ecconomy? How had is it to put a diesel engine in a truck that came factory with a 350? Not sure what year i want just wanting to find out a few answers before i start my search.

Thanks

2WD K5 or PU with a 6.2 NA, 700R-4, 3.42's, and some 235/75's would net you mid 20's on the highway. 25 should be pretty easy, and you may do better if you keep the speed down (less wind resistance)

If you don't mind it being a little more gutless you could try 3.08's and maybe pick up another 1-1.5 mpg.

Pretty easy swap, I did the same swap 3 years ago...

I really dont mind if its gutless if it gets good MPG. Ive got other vehicles to drive if i want to get on it. Id like to get 30 MPG.

your asking alot from a pickup of any kind to get 30 mpg. mid to high 20's prolly 28 at the max w/ a 6.2 thats properly geared. these trucks are just to big, heavy, and un aerodynamic.

My old Plymouth Sundance in High School (10 years ago) with a 90hp 4 cyl never got 30mpg. You're asking a lot of a truck to get that kinda mileage.

my dad had an 82 serria 2wd with a 6.2 in it that he got 28 MPG with. I figured getting a higher rear end and less weight i might be able to get 30. That truck had a camper shell with a seating insert in it.

So my thinking was get and 88-98 (more aero dynamic?), short bed. I didnt know if there were any tricks to do to those engines to get better mpg or not.

I think diesel's your only hope. My grandma's Nova with 305 and 3.08 gears and 2 barrel only pulled down 25 on the freeway

A camper shell, from my experience, actually helps mileage on the freeway if it's lightweight.

if you run without one or with the tailgate down it will help more than a shell, otherwise its just a big wing.

Higher gears means using more gas to get the thing going..... thats why the 700-r4 has such a low 1st gear.

I'd probably run a NV3500 5 speed instead of the 700R-4. Less losses through the drivetrain should net you another 1 mpg.

With the new body style I'd even consider lowering it 3"/5" and running a canopy. Don't forget to keep the factory front air dam.

30 might be a stretch, but you could get pretty close to it. Other things that'll help mileage is good free flowing exhaust, and even port matching the intake won't hurt either. You just want the motor to make the most efficient use of the fuel it is burning. Less rolling resistance (somewhat narrow quality radials) Less wind resistance (See above) Less drivetrain losses all will mean less throttle needed at any given speed.

Nope, the NV 3500 is the light duty all aluminum 5 speed without a granny low. Should hold up fine to a stock NA 6.2 and cost a ton less to source.

He is building a 2WD high mpg commuter, not a tow rig or rock crawler.

i understand that, i had just never heard of the 3500, i have heard of the 3550 which i know came/ comes in jeeps but never a 3500. i guess ya learn something new everyday :D

A very similar tranny is the Getrag 5 speed used from 88 to ? when the NV3500 replaced it.

Rene

yeah ive heard of the getrag, also used is the ax15, could that be the getrag? they are still currently in production, depends on the motor and options you get

The AX15 is a Jeep tranny IIRC. Both the Getrag and NV3500 were found stock behind the 4.3, 5.0 and 5.7 in the 88 and up trucks. It'd be a direct swap to bolt one up behind the 6.2.

Thanks for the tips guys. I dont know if ill be able to do it or not but im almost to the point where im going to have to get rid of somethign that gets bad MPG and get something that gets decent MPG. And I WILL NOT DRIVE A GEO or something similar. At least now im pointed in the right direction.
