I am going to need mud flaps to pass inspection here in NJ. Does anyone know of any good ones to buy? Do they make ones that are easy to take on and off, I'll probably put them on for the inspection and high way driving or when towing. Anyone make their own? Please share.
thanks

I'd opt for the ones 18 wheelers use,and if need be,cut them down to size..they'll last forever and wont "sail" like lighter ones will at high speeds..

Many truckers make hanger brackets from that perforated angle iron stuff or
"uni-strut" you can get at Home Depot,or use pipe, and bolt the flaps to a larger pipe that slides over the one bolted to the frame,so they can be removed or replaced easily..

I am beginning to realize the reason many of our older trucks have rotted away is thanks to having no mud flaps up front--it lets salt spray and mud plaster all over the cab floor supports and get trapped behind those plastic gas tank sheilds, and it never gets washed off very well, and it litteraly eats away at the cab & rockers..
I've noticed that trucks that had flaps or running boards from early in their lives, seem to have much less rust & rot than one that didn't..

I welded some 1.75 .120 tube to the frame of the truck, put the mudflaps on some 1.5 tube, slides in slick and they are easy to remove

I'm not necessarily suggesting that you not install mud flaps but thought you might be interested in the fact that, as of August 1st, there will no longer be mechanical inspections in NJ, emission testing only:

The police can still cite you for mechanical deficiencies so you might want mud flaps to avoid tickets.

I do not know the implications for vehicles lifted more than 4" which currently require a tip test and usually mud flaps. I could not find anything about it in the documentation. It would be nice for that to go away too.

correct me if I am wrong, but does it stay that the exemption only applies to 5 year old cars and newer, but blazer is a 90 so I don't think it will apply to me, but thanks for the info, I'll let my friends know

All things aside I would not suggest to anyone that you "may" be able to get away with no mud flaps. Take a rock to the windshield from "that guy" and your not a happy camper.
I used conveyor belt material, cheap/thick/easy...

yup, as a Joysey inmate, this is on my list of "have to do"..... definitely wanna come up with some slick removable minimum setup.... i'll run em on the street and take em off when wheeling.... conveyor belt does work great, i've used that in the past...

as long as nobody says i need front ones... that would be ultra uber ghey! :haha:

Exemption from any and all inspection, yes 5 years old or newer. But, mechanical inspection is being eliminated for all vehicles regardless of age; you will now only be inspected for emissions. Many diesel vehicles are also completely exempted.

Here is some more info:

I did not suggest that a vehicle that needs mud flaps be run without them, I was just pointing out that as of Aug. 1st, it is not something that will be required to pass regular NJ inspection.

If your vehicle needs them, it would be dangerous and irresponsible to not run them. And as I also pointed out, the police can still cite you for mechanical issues -- including no mud flaps.

I realize what you posted, it was suggestive to me. You also said you may still be cited so you might want install them to avoid a ticket... screw the ticket, you might cost me or someone else a windshield. What I am saying is "ALWAYS PROMOTE MUDFLAPS"!
