killed a starter today, luckly had a spare

whats the best way to keep mud/water out of the starter? this is the first time ive had a problem with it, but a guy i went with (ford guy) is on starter #4.

that was some DEEP STICKY mud, seen a chevy with about 12" lift and 44" boggers (BLOWN BBC /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif /forums/images/graemlins/bow.gif /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif) stuck up to the body line. my stock k20 had no chance /forums/images/graemlins/shame.gif

Maybe you could use a marine starter? /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

i dont think you can seal it up i just took mine apart yesterday and cleaned it all out, need to get a new one today it dident help, just buy quality and be sure to get as much warinty as you can /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Thats a good idea, they must be water proof, but will they work?

stay home big daddy. /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gifsilcon would work BUT if you have to change the starter it will suck.i water proofed my ignition with silicon before and it worked great, but i could not get the cap off. /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif michigan mud. /forums/images/graemlins/k5.gifto /forums/images/graemlins/truck.gif

nope, i have a non K case and i don't like the plastic 2wd ones.
did GM ever put a metal one on a non K case?

one thing that gets me is there was no mud on the torque converter, flexplate, oil pan or tranny pan. /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

never had a problem with water in the distributor.
the guy i went with did (Ford) we sprayed his cap with lithium grease and never had a problem since.

your spending alot of time with FORD guy's /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gifi wonder if lithium grease would work around the seams???? /forums/images/graemlins/k5.gifto /forums/images/graemlins/truck.gif

maybe the casting's bad on top of the starter??just enough to let crap in. /forums/images/graemlins/k5.gifto /forums/images/graemlins/truck.gif

the starter looked fine, even after we cleaned it out it still won't turn over. /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

there are only ford guys around here. me and another guy in town are the only chevy guys that go offroad. besides someone has to pull the ford guys home /forums/images/graemlins/whistling.gif

/forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif maybe it's just a bad starter that you got lucky with for awhile? /forums/images/graemlins/k5.gifto /forums/images/graemlins/truck.gif

How do you tell the difference between a k case cover or a non k case cover? Number/type of holes?

a K case has a K cast into the side of the bellhousing. also they have 6 10mm holes to hold the dust cover on. the non K cases have 4 small holes and no casting mark.

Ok, I knew about the k on the case, but not the covers. I have a non k case in my k20 that has a metal cover, it has only 4 holes (2 per side) and is held on with something that looks like sheetmetal screws.

Sand is worse.
After about 3 times of taking the starter apart and cleaning it out it is a gonner.
get a new one with a warranty, after a bit take it back and get another.
Install a ford relay and just have one wire going to it.
It takes about 5 minutes to change the starter.
If ya have a manual tranny /forums/images/graemlins/whistling.gif ya can wait till ya get home to swap it out.

Man! Im surprised Tim has not disputed our conversation! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif LOL! /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

I'm sure he will shortly. /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif

I live next to the river and go wheelin on the coast alot.
When the K5 was runnin I was hittin the dunes everyday.
Everytime I pulled it apart it was packed with sand.
after a bit it tears up everything in the starter.

Sometimes it rains too, so there is mud here as well.
But for all of the sloppin, sand has taken out all of my starters.
465 with the old style 2 peice bell housing that isn't there anymore.
