My muffler rusted out to the point that I could hear it last night on the way to work. So this morning I went to the local Meineke, where I THOUGHT I had a good re pore with the shop manager. Next thing I know he's calling me out to the bay and tells me its gonna be $606. I told him to put the truck on the deck and I had to talk it over with the wife .

What I wanna know is, what could POSSIBLY be in a stock exhaust for a K5 that could cost 6 bills?!?!

Or is he just trying to pad it to make it worth the time? :angry1::angry1::angry1:

Is that a quote for the whole system?

I'm pretty sure you can buy a complete Walker system for that truck (check summitracing.com) and I'd bet it's a whole lot less than that. But they gotta make money, pay mechanics, rent, etc., it probably requires that much over parts.

Exhaust is certainly no fun to deal with, but doing the whole truck? I don't know as I'd think that outrageous. You know the parts aren't likely to be less than $250, and I can't imagine the labor to replace the studs in the exhaust manifolds that will certainly break.

I had the complete exhaust from the header flanges to the tip with a new CA approved cat a magnaflow muffler and a nice stainless tip for $550 OTD. The guy is hosing you. **** him

Ask him what the buddy price would be if you bought the exhaust you wanted and had them install it, that way you can see what price he's going to charge for labor. I can't imagine it'd take them more than 1/2 hour to install.

He want's 3 hours at $97 to "manufacture" the pipe and install the system. I'm gonna get another quote tomorrow.

3-4 hrs would have been to build a true dual system(back when I worked at muffler shop).

That quote was just to cut the old muffler and tail pipe off, and bend the exhaust pipe. SINGLE pipe. NO dual. I don't know where the guy got his numbers from.

Went to Monroe this AM, for a new muffler, the small pipe between the cat and the muffler and the labor $270. The guy reused my tailpipe, it was in good shape. In and out in about an hour and a half.

That's good customer service right there. :thumb:

Most shops here like Midas wont do "partial" exhaust replacements...they want to chop the pipe(s) off at the engine or cat back and sell complete systems...and if your exhaust manifolds need studs,or appear like they are too rusted or thin to get the studs to unscrew without breaking, they'll either tell you they cant do the job,or suggest another shop that will do it..

Sometimes they send customers to my friends shop, and pay him to do the exhaust manifolds--he's not afraid to do exhaust manifold studs,or replace the whole manifold--even if they are completely shot and he has to cut them off in pieces with a sawsall, and thats not uncommon here...the muffler shops dont like dealing with broken studs,or manifold bolts that snapped off in the heads..he doesn't enjoy that either, but he gets a good penny for doing the "dirty work"..

A lot of shops here wont use an old converter if the flange has rotted either, when 9 times out of 10,one of those "handcuff" split flanges would work just fine...instead they pressure the customer into buying a new converter...

My K5 had some god-awful homemade full dual glass pack setup on the bone stock 305. I took it into a local shop and had them do a full factory single exhaust, y-pipe and all, for $506 out the door. It's 1/4 what I paid for the truck 4 years ago, but boy was it worth it.

The hackjob dual exhaust that was on it had 2 pipes running straight out under the back bumper, so whenever you had the rear window rolled down, pretty much all of the exhaust fumes would come straight into the cab.

I had full duals put on (I supplied the mufflers) for $140.

I cut it apart later as it wouldn't fit with my rear shocks installed... But still, that's way over priced.
