Just thought I’d start a thread about owning this one: a 1965 GMC 1-ton pickup with flatbed, 4speed and what I believe is a 250ci straight-six.

It’s a lovely brown color, possibly original. The clear coat is flaking in spots but the base coat seems good all around. The only rust I’ve seen is in the typical rocker panel area. The PO said that the flatbed is factory — it has very old wooden planks with some aftermarket diamond plate welded on top. Apparently GMC didn’t make regular truck beds for these at the time. Many rolled out of the factory with no bed at all.

The motor is strong, and our odometer says ~500mi, so it just recently rolled over. I’ve identified the engine as either a 230 or 250ci straight six. From what I’ve read, the location of the fuel pump relative to the motor mount indicates which Chevrolet straight six it is. I’ll have to look into the cylinder to see the piston shape to make sure on the displacement. 156CC5C1-1F24-44DD-B850-502993FD659B.jpeg 40FE4F29-CE54-4FBF-B817-3552CA6EB8EA.jpeg E733B8DB-A910-4CB5-A7BB-E89098D7946E.jpeg CB3F5DC3-8192-4309-80C8-60824D9B0E19.jpeg 5024AF57-A404-4825-BF9A-910B37D1EC91.jpeg 5D51D247-DFCA-4CF2-AFAC-BAB32C0ABA0A.jpeg

Everything works, but the heater knob is missing and the heater fan makes a horrible noise. Both are easy fixes. Wipers and lighting all work flawlessly, even the dome light.

My plans for the truck are nothing special right now. I’ll fix things like the heater fan and an exhaust leak, but probably run it as-is until the motor or trans finally goes. With the large, wide flatbed, I can haul water and toys in the summer. If I get bored, I might buff the paint, remove the diamond plate from the bed and then put in new wood.

The brakes will probably get an upgrade from the single master cylinder. I’ve got some brake boosters lying around too.

With this and my Ford 851 Powermaster parked outside it looks like an 80 year old man lives here. Haha
