I have a 700R4 in my jeep behind a 4 cyl diesel. this is a novak conversions transmission, rebuilt and installed last month. this trans has less than 100 miles on it, TV cable is tuned correctly.

today I took it on its first long trip since the install. total of about 50 miles of freeway driving.

Along the way, the transmission governor cap fell off, causing the governor assembly to fall out and I promptly lost all my fluid while going 70mph down the freeway.

There was no indication of a problem until the massive cloud of smoke behind me. How does this happen with a new transmission? I can only assume it wasnt assembled right?

add a clip

it can happen...reinstall it and add a clip from a 350 or such to keep it from happening again......no biggie...

The clip that holds the cover on bends easily. Sometimes when you remove them they get bent enough that they are not tight when you re-install. When you install your new one make sure it clips tightly to your transmission. you just have to bend it to tweak its fit.

No problem. I thought those parts are the same as a T-350. I never tried it so I checked the Part numbers & they match. List price form the supply house for the pair is $35.16 . They are used parts of course.

You should be able to go into any transmission shop & ask for them. They should be able to supply them to you from a core. I only listed the price so you would have a starting point. I am not trying to be a vendor.

I hope the trans is fine. I was surprised to see the governor still hanging on there. It must be that the gear taper pulls it in as the vehicle moves forward.

I would be contacting Novak with these pictures and ask them what they're going to do for you.

Some 700's don't have a provision for the retaining clip. I would use a small line of red Loctite around the cap when I installed it and make sure it is a good snug fit into the case. Be sure and clean any fluids from cap or mating surface before doing this.

I sent em last night, and called this am. they want me to reassemble it and see what the line pressure is. they are sending me out a new governor kit and cap w/ wire bail. I dont think this case has provisions for the retainer but if it does, Ill obviously use it.

Frankly Im pretty underwhelmed with them and their company. Ive spent about 4000 with them in the past 3 months, and thus far, everything Ive gotten from them has been painfully late, mis ordered, doesn't fit, or missing pieces.

I know I must be the exception to the rule, or they wouldn't be in business still.

We will see how this goes.
