Dropped it off at 9 AM, they had it out at 1PM and called me to tell me what the problem was. Remember the knocking noise I had? It was the flywheel, but it wasn't cracked. The weights were bent and that was making the noise. That part is $75. The planetaries and the sun shell are also bad which adds $85 and $65 to the price. On top of that the speedo gear is excesssively worn and need to be replaced, labor for that is another $75. Grand total from the original $495 quote, it is now $795. This thing better last me...

I know that's a lot of money, but a friend of mine recently had his 4L60 rebuilt in his '94 ext cab shortbed to the tune of $1800!

When my 4L80E was rebuilt in my Sub, it cost $2200...of course nothing short of draining the fluid and running it dry can break it now! (knock on wood)

Haze gray and underway...or blue, in my case.

Even that, my TH400 in my 67 C10 has blown rubber tranny cooler lines twice, each time losing 10 quarts. Refilled it, kept cruising down the road.

The only cheap transmission work is installing shift kits and changing the fluid.

I put $500 into mine just for parts. A 700 rebuild with full labor (tranny still in truck) is usually over $1000

But even with that in mind, $75 dollars labor for changing the speedo gear is kind of silly.

in the 'For what it's worth' department, I paid $1700 for my GM re-man unit with a 3/50 warr on it. That was installed by local 4x4 shoppe in Colo Spgs.
Your's sounds a lot less expensive!

I asked a local shop how much it would be to rebuild my 700r4 and they said around $1300. I also found out that if I pulled it myself and dropped it off to them they would take 300 bucks off the cost. Anything to save money.
