My 72

So a buddy was telling me that these metric tire sizes vary. For example, if I got 315/75r16, I'd still need to specify that I want a 33", 34", or 35" profile? That's so confusing. Is that true?

Just go on the manufacturers website and pull down the datasheet for the specific tire you want. They typically provide true installed diameter, revolutions per mile, etc.

That's the best source of accurate info.

Some things never change!!! Finally made time for a quick freeway run.
205
TH350
4:11s

50 mph; 2800 rpm

Thanks for your help and input.

Thanks to everyone else for help and input as well!!

Something isn't right..... either your tachometer is off, your speedo is off, or your gearing is deeper than you think.... or your converter is slipping like mad:

2800RPM with 4.11s and 33's (top config) would be running 65MPH, not 50MPH. Download a free GPS speedometer app and compare it to your speedometer for starters. If that checks out, we'll need to dig in deeper and maybe pull a diff cover to look at ring gear markings...

BTW -> Comparing the 33" tire setup with a 35" tire setup (bottom calcs) it should also be obvious that you can't really use larger tires to get an "overdrive" effect with that TH350..... it only reduces your highway cruise RPMs by about 150.

Thanks for this. I'm sure my speedo is off so I'll take another run and use WAZE to get a more accurate read however...
  1. The stall converter is really high but don't know that its slipping. I actually bought one that matches better and got the matching flex plate but thats a first timer for me so I don't know when I'll kick that off
  2. I have another post on this damn rattle at speeds above 35 when letting off throttle. My front drive shaft is shot and has tons of play in the CV so I'm going to pull it hoping that is whats causing the rattle then go and drop it off at high angle for a rebuild.

Is it shifting into 3rd? 50 mph @ 2800 w/33 inch tires equals 5.70 ratio. Just so happens 3.73 ratio multiplied by 1.52 equals 5.66. Are you sure it has 4.11 gears??
Use a GPS for your speedo and let us know.

Might also want to check whether the transfer case is in low range or not. Don't ask me how I know this problem...

Thanks for all the recommendations. I'll post up soon. I had a small procedure done in my had so it'll be a few days before I can get to it.
