What do i need to do to it to pull about 400 hp. It sits currently at 250 hp. What engine mods, and brand suggestions that i can start looking at... Also would it be better to switch to an auto trany. Since i have the 465.

Carb, headers, intake, and cam for starters. What's the intended usage, and ratio, tires, etc?

I'm pretty sure a basic, intake, heads, cam, headers will easily get you 400 hp. 4x4high knows a lot about 454s.

Pretty much just going to be used for a weekend driver, but i want something with power at stop lights.... I want to keep the body looking stock but have the power off the line. My gearing now is 373 i think, it has the 14 bolt rear end. It has the 465 with granny low, but i hear i really wont want to use that trany. The tires i will eventually get will be street tires not to much tread. By the way thanks for the responses.

For a 4X4 you want to stay with a short cam unless you are pulling sleds. A cam, headers, intake and perhaps a pocket port can easily get you in that range. Try to keep the cam <280 degrees for lower end performance

It doesn't take much to wake up a big block. Heads can do alot over anything else. My old 84 had a stock 454 with 781 heads, and for the size of the truck would **** and git. But a small cam, headers, intake, good 2 1/2" dual exhaust would wake it right up.

No such thing as quick shifting a 465, it will go in the next gear when it wants to. They weren't designed for shifting fast, but for pulling heavy loads.

If I wanted to switch out the trany, what would be a good swap?

So can i just switch out heads first and do this one part at a time as the funds allow?

well as for tranny . . . if bbc and hp i would go with 400 turbo and 205 tcase. best beef of auto and tcase.

as for swapin heads . . . see what ya got first. then if you realy need to its full top tear down of motor. so best to do all in one big job. otherwise you will be redoing some work later for intake and cam swap. why do it 2x . ?

search big block or bbc here in the garage lots of great info here .

my suggestion would be to start saving your money, none of this stuff is cheap.... start accumulating some parts, and during that time, read this forum over and over... so you can learn what needs to be done and the best approach... honestly, it doesn't sound like you have much experience and knowledge will be your best mod...

you have ALOT of things to consider.... to start, h.p isn't a be-all... trucks live on torque, so that is a HUGE deciding factor in what parts combination you run in a motor.... it applies to everything from head/cam selection to exhaust primary sizing, etc, etc...

it isn't just a matter of throwing high performance parts at a motor... what's the motors mileage? it's real easy to throw a new top end at a motor, heads/cam/intake, then nuke your bottom end... a compression test and close visual inspection once the heads are off may reveal cylinders not worthy of fresh valve seats, etc...

the absolute first thing to consider is exhaust..... it's the first thing a mill needs to be woken up... and no matter what you find in the motor, it's a transferable part...

a manual to auto is easier than auto to manual, but you still have some things to consider.. you'll need a new radiator for trans cooling lines... a shifter..... different x-member... and modded or new driveshafts...

as you can see, there are tons of things to constempate.. not to deter you, just want you to be forewarned... reading and asking questions in here will be your best friend... :D

i forgot to say, its 2wd. So i dont need to worry about a tcase. I am not that knowledgable about a lot but i have thoes people on here and my mechanic who would be doing all the work. He has suggestions, but i wanted to ask Ck5'ers as well. Thanks again....:D
