I was doing some towing with my 91 2500 with 454...
I had driven amost an hour at about 65 mph..when..I noticed..my motor died..
I hit the gas...nothing...
Then...it back-fired..(almost blowing my exhaust off)
After that...the truck sputtered..to my destination.

The truck sat for 3 hours...
it started...and ran fine..on the way home..
but this time...I didn't go faster than 60..

My question is...
Do you guys think this may be fuel pump related???
I'm NOT getting any DASH lights...
and I changed my fuel filter a couple months ago.

Thanks

Re: My 91 454 vortec....dies....while hauling...HELP!!!

Could be low fuel pressure. Usually though you would get a lean O2 sensor code.................................

Re: My 91 454 vortec....dies....while hauling...HELP!!!

I would say that the fuel pump isn't keeping up with the added demand of the towing.

But the truck just dies..maybe no fuel pressure.
I get NO engine light at all...

kyser_soze

That's what I had in mind...
The truck does have over 250,000...
It may be time for a fuel pump. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: My 91 454 vortec....dies....while hauling...HELP!!!

Could the coil or some part of the ignition system be getting overheated for some reason??????

Re: My 91 454 vortec....dies....while hauling...HELP!!!

So if it backfired, that means there was fuel being pumped into the cylinders, but it wasn't combusting.

Could the convertor be plugged?
My thought also goes out to perhaps an ignition module?

Re: My 91 454 vortec....dies....while hauling...HELP!!!

I noticed...this morning...while going to work..
It drives fine...until I give-it some gas..
I hit about 80 mph...on the freeway...
it wants to die...on the small hills...

When I back down to 65....it stops...

I should have pulled over to check the converter..
to see if it's glowing..

If it was a converter...
I should get a engine light.

I'm gonna check fuel pressure...
and the regulator...

I don't think it's an electrical problem...
Because there seems to be power...
The truck seems to be running outta gas...
shutting the engine down.

Thanks for your suggestions

Re: My 91 454 vortec....dies....while hauling...HELP!!!

My 89 did something similar to that and it was the coil and module in the disty..... But it was more of a sudden death than a sparatic thing.

I'll ask my buddy Fred and see what he says...

Not necessairly. If the converter was plugged, it would also died when you came to a stop. Does it only do it when you hit bumps?

No...just the slight hills...give me a problem.
The truck never has come to a stop...
it just shuts down for a second or 2..
if I let up..on the gas..it goes away.. /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Re: My 91 454 vortec....dies....while hauling...HELP!!!

Does it have a crank sensor? or a pick up coil in the distributor,or the module could be crapping out.The coil could be cracked or weak, causing weak spark that will fail under a load. You might have a bad ground also--wouldnt hurt to run a new ground wire from the engine to the negative battery terminal--my friends 92 caddy had a similar "stumble"under a load--moving the power seat switch could make it act up,so he decided to try a ground wire--its been fine ever since.
I learned somthing yesterday anyone who own a jeep cherokee should know--after replacing the electric fuel pump in the tank of a 95 cherokee with a 4.0 six,it still wouldnt start--we had no voltage at the pump when testing with a test light--it had power before,so we assumed the fuel pump was shot, and changed it---we checked the wiring, fuses, relays etc.-everything checked out ok--after much research we learned the nuetral safty switch contols a LOT of things on a jeep--it has about 20 wires on it--the dealership said to check it by replacing it with a known good one-they said they replace a lot of them--went to the junkyard, got and tried another one--same deal--then a tech at the dealer said to replace the crank sensor--we were disbeleivers--thinking the crank sensor only sent a pulse to the distributor to tell it when to fire, but not on a jeep!--after we put in a new one,the fuel pump came on and it started right up!--seems jeeps wire the fuel pump curcuit through the crank sensor,so it it fails, you have no spark OR fuel pump!--drove is nuts for 2 days!. /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif(P.S.--not sure but I think this only applies to jeeps, not any GM trucks). /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I changed my fuel filter a couple months ago.

Do it again, or at least check it by shaking out the inlet side over a clean rag and see what comes out. But if you have it off you may as well put a new one on.

After checking all of the above...
I found...a couple loose grounds..and a dirty fuel filter.

I hauled my rig over 3 hours without a glitch...saturday.
I'm headed to Wellsville this saturday...
That will be a good test!!! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Thanks

My 88 1-ton did the same thing and the cat was clogged big time! It would not do it though until it got to normal op temp....
