He is fine no injurys at all. He was in my other brothers 04 k1500 chevy. He made a left turn onto the highway and pulled into the inside lane. Apperantly the truck driver thought my bro would pull into the (center)turning lane instead of the inside lane of traffic, and at the same time he changed from the outside lane to the inside lane and the trailer axles side swiped the pickup.

OK HERES THE TECH! The semi clipped the pass door and front fender. So the door, firewall below the a piller, front fender and front suspention are all damaged. What are your guys guess? Is the truck going to be total loss as far as the insurance goes?

Have any of you actually bought a totaled vehicle back from insurance? How does that work? I have herd of people doing it but I dont know how it actually works.

ANYWAY my bro said if it does end up being total loss that I could buy it back for parts. Im thinking the 5.3 would be real nice in my old tired worn out 97 GMC. I havent done much research but from what I hear the 5.3 has a TON of fairly cheap mods to increase power.

Also do any of you know how much work it would take to swap the 5.3 in my 97 I do know its a differnt animal than the vortec 350.

Usually if you buy back the vehicle it is just done through your insurance. When my k5 was stolen/recovered a few years ago my ins. totaled it(all they took was my wheels/tires and some tools) but since the wheels/tires were more than what my truck was worth they scrapped it.

They gave me almost $4600 for my truck...minus my deductible of $250 and then they charged me $400 for the truck. That left me with around $3900 and my k5. I was happy.

I believe they go off of the year and its general value. My wife totaled our 99 Durango this past September and I think we would have been able to buy it back for around $800 but it wasn't worth it for us to do that. We were so upside down on it that I was happy to see it go.

Note sure what the policy is in your state but here in California if the vehicle is totaled by your insurance company you have the option to buy it back but it will have a salvaged title (doesn't mean anything unless you planned to keep it and resell at some point at which a salvaged title vehicle doesn't bring much money). I don't know what parameters are used to put a "value" on it for buying it back but usually it is pretty cheap. As long as you are only using it for parts then no big deal but if you intend to repair it and keep driving it they make you do a brake and lamp inspection (California at least) before you can register it for use on the street again.

Also since you said you would want it for the engine you better make sure what your states policy is for engine swaps assuming you have to go through emissions testing. Once again, here in California you are allowed to "upgrade" your engine which means the same displacement or LARGER and also the emissions for the newer engine must be in place and operable. So if your 97 had a 5.7 and you want to install a 5.3 you cannot do it (once again this is Californias law, maybe it covers other states as well).

Don't have to worry about engine swaps and emissions crap in my area. Utah don't have any laws as far as engine swaps but the emissions is supposed to be factroy for the year of the vehicle after 1992. My rural area does not enforce emissions though. Kinda dont ask dont tell situation. And yes if it is totalled and I buy it back it will be parted out so salvage title wont be an issue.

Just talked to my bro he said he thinks its caved in in the door hinge area so I assume it will be totaled. Kinda sucks for my other bro that owns the truck hes not completley upside down but he will loose his truck and not have a way to replace it. I doubt they will do much more than just pay it off.

Mostly Im glad my baby bro is fine other than feeling chitty about crashing.

If all you want is just the 5.3l, my guess is that they are going to want more for the truck than what you could find a used 5.3l for.

MY dad just totalled his Ranger. they gave him $10,200 for it i believe. He bought it back for $800 and almost has it redone. New cab $200, new doors $200 (had to convert from manual to power windows so he used his old regulators and such), 2-new rear axles, and after paint and all the body work he may have $2500 in a $10,000 truck.

As for your brothers i'd say unless he can buy it back and sell the parts to make his money back i wouldn't do it. My dad didn't hurt anything but cosmetic and bent both rear axles. So that's why he chose to rebuild

Just throwin that out there.

As for the 5.3 swap i have no idea. :dunno: Never messed with newer stuff

I would be the one buying it back not my bro I would then swap the 5.3 and auto trans into my 97 and part out the rest.

The wrecked truck will not get rebuilt.
