My daughter turned 3 on July 20th. The day after her party, We took her to Toys R Us to get a power Wheel. She picked the Mustang.

Took it home, started drinking beer and building. This is the first time sitting in the Mustang. Already learning bad habits.

It took her about 20 minutes to learn how to drive. She is awesome!!!

First trip to the park.

Time to start modding it. Plans are remote power shut off. So when she gets close to danger I can shut it off with a key fob. Driving lights, head lights, and brake lights. And some kind of music.

Parts coming in.

I put 2 led's for driving lights. I'm waiting on two 10 watt Cree led's to show up. They will be the headlights. These are just the small LEDs.

Lots more to come.

One thing to watch out for. You are dealing with a very limited power source, unless you upgrade it.
I'm guessing that it uses LiOn, unless they are still running sealed lead-acid like the last version I worked on.
Either way, that motor sucks the heck out of the juice.

10 watt Crees will draw close to 1.7 amps for the pair, plus probably melting the headlight housing if you put them inside.

If you are going to do that plus any other car-powered accessories, I suggest finding someplace to mount a fair sized Gelcell 12volt that can be charged separately
just for the goodies.

The last time I did anything to one of those, was when I bought a friend's twin girls one each for their birthday.
They were about the same age, and now one has a 3 year old son.

God, I feel old.........

Funny part was, I told him what would happen first thing, and he did not believe me. We charged the batteries, then wrapped them so that the girls could not tell what they were.
Somehow loaded them both on his van for the trip back to Atlanta where they lived.

They had not been there an hour before he called laughing. Said I had nailed it.
Said after they got through jumping up and down squealing, they each jumped in one and started off.
After a few false starts and a little nervousness, they took off around the house in opposite directions.
Coming back around, in a wide open yard with no obstacles, they managed to hit head on!

Neither one was hurt, but my friend wanted to know how did I know they would hit head on?
I told him it was because they were almost perfect twins. I have known some twins that think differently or act differently, but these did not.

They were going to do the exact same thing when they saw the other car coming at them. And they did.

Nice :waytogo:

Soo, how long till the 24v conversion happens :D and have you seen the site -modifiedpowerwheels.com ?

Keep us posted on the pink "mini-Munepit" :pimp: :waytogo:

Nice. :) Does that have a built in real stereo and key switch that works?

Bought my Daughter a 12V one off Craigslist, it's a Jeep. It is pre-radio, and she said the fake one it had was broken and I needed to fix it, so made a very ghetto wood radio mount, and used a GM radio antenna off the back. $30 pioneer off Craigslist, its better than the one in my car now!

Bought a lawn tractor key switch off ebay, because they learn quick what keys really do in cars, so it had to be functional. Used a GM fuel pump relay to power the whole thing, hasn't melted yet. I actually like this for the functionality, don't have to worry about the battery draining if the key is off/out

Horn buttons on wheel didn't work, so re-wired that so one button now triggers a "horn" off an alarm system of some type. Our truck horns are unfortunately way too loud to use, I tried.

I thought the stock battery was too small, so I bought an 18Ah battery and stuck it in there, zip-ties worked good lol.

I think lights would be cool, really dig the LED's. I should wire some up to turn on/off through the ignition relay and steering wheel buttons.

Does it have dual motors or a single? If it has a single gearbox / 1 wheel drive, the first mod is to drop a second motor/gearbox on the other side. Upping the voltage is obvious, but you can't always jump to the next battery rating without melting the motors or chewing up the gearboxes. Scooter stuff is really cheap, so it usually makes sense to run 2 batteries for 24V, then setup the throttle control to set the motor drive voltage that's best. I have built my own PWM controllers for them, but the scooter controllers from china are so cheap that they make more sense. Plus they usually offer soft-start and undervoltage protection built in. I built a throttle pedal from a potentiometer on one, but found it was pointless because the kids only used the throttle at full anyway, so I had just added complexity. You can set the scooter controller with a pair or resistors or a hidden pot instead and then increase the drive voltage as the kid gets older.

lol, Too cute Jeff! Start savin now bud, she's going to want a REAL one when she gets that licence, and that time will come before you know it.

Thanks guys.

Where to start. I guess I might have to get some less powerful LEDs. I didn't think they put out that much heat. I will see when I get them.

I'm going to bump this to 18 volts to start with. It does have two motors. I have a pile of power hair batteries so I will use those. It came with a 12volt 9.5Ahr. But I have a bunch of 12 volt 35Ahr.

That website modified powerwheels is off the hook! Thanks.

Ellie will be racing a bandolero car when she turns 5. I'm going to buy one for her next yr.

OMG, I just did a Youtube search for "modified power wheels"

have fun with the ideas. too many to post up here :D

Been a while. I will give an update. I've done a few mods. Lights, extra batteries, volt meter and modified the steering to turn sharper. Here are some pics.

Headlights.

I need to put in the small LEDs back in. Just lazy. Here is the headlight. 3 watt LEDs.

Switch in the dash.

Tail lights. I bought and modified a 2008 Mustang tail panel. This one had stickers for tail lights. I made this work. Has real plastic light covers.

Here is the volt meter and the light switch. There is also purple glow light under the Mustang. I will upload pics in a bit.

Awsome Jeff.

I have a car battery in a free old power wheels 4 wheeler. It will go 2 hours no problem

We did run a 24 volt in pink jeep and it hauled ass.

I posted the vid on ytube screwing around with my phone. but I coulnt tell you which video.

Thanks guys. Not done yet though. I have a remote kill switch I need to install. Then I'm going to bump it up to 18 volts. Should be fast. Working on a lift kit too. 3" lift and will be using Grave Digger wheels and tires.

Like the one in this commercial.

I think it's time for a big block, D60/14FF doubler/4l80e action, 42's, lockers and a cage! :D :haha: :waytogo: A pink cage of course.
