My dream crate engine

not always true, according to your logic, a 400 horse 383 would put out about the same torque numbers as a 400 horse Honda I-4. simply not true.

building for torque, and building for horsepower are 2 totally different ballgames.

That is why I said this first...

Very very true... but USUALLY hp and tq follow each other

And I never said anything about a 4 banger just meant your good ol sbc. But since you did, look at the subuaru wrx sti... 300 hp and 300 ft lbs of tq... most of the time its the combination of components but I did say USUALLY.

Also guys, just so you know I'm not looking for a low end moster torquer. My usual cruising speed is about 1650 - 2200rpm and I like to be able to peg the engine over 5000rpm from time to time. I'm not worried about having all the torque on the low end, because I can just use my granny gear to power through anything.

look at the curves. the WRX motor is completely useless in a truck.

you do want a down low torque monster, you just dont know it. keep in mind, we're not dealing with a 2500# street car, we're talking 6000# truck, you need all of the torque you can get. get something that peaks around 1800-2000, and with good quality parts, you should be able to spin it to 5K no problem.

Beater is right. Could you run a super high horse motor that sacrifices bottom end torque? Of course. Point is, is doesnt matter if you are 40:1 or 140:1, have a 465, doublers, etc... If you are lugging your engine around, you want it to have have torque, good throttle response and run smoothly at low rpm's. Those 600hp smallblocks generally don't do that well under 2-3k.

I think a 454 GM crate motor with TBI would be more than enough for a wheeling truck.. Crazy horsepower really only has a place in mud racing and sand duneing... you'll save a ton of money and have somehting more reliable going with a near stock BBC...

just my 2 cents.

Yeah I know its not the most practicle but would be sweet to see that between my fenders.

but not in a "Small" block package I like the idea of BBC-CID in the Lighter/Smaller SBC . as for the tourque curves being unusable..... well that's just a Cam and Intake change away . but even though they Tourqe peak is "higher" they still make more grunt down low then most stock Bigblocks . So as long as it will run on Pump Gas Go for it

you could build one and it would be cheaper than buying a crate engine.
Unlees you get the machine work for free and get all your parts Dirt cheap you can't build one cheaper

If I had that much to blow on a motor it'd be this little monster... it doesn't get much more badass then a 454 sb chevy laying down 600 hp and 575 ft lbs n/a that will fun on pump gas. That thing is a work of art. SB's rule.

I already have the plans on what I want to build for my dream car... 69 camaro built for road racing with this setup only alumnim block. Now all I need is about 25 g's:rolleyes: :eek1:

the 415 is impressive but for that price you could have one built with the same power then put efi on it.

Been out for a while... You can actually build a 550 hp 454 sbc for about 6 grand... four wheeler did the build a few years ago.

If we're putting forth expensive engines that are better-suited to short, full-throttle, high-rpm runs:

I'm sure that there are even more ridiculous suggestions than that, probably something spot-on to power a top fueler and live for a few dozen quarter-miles between rebuilds.

Im pretty partial to my crate motor. HP and torque curves like a ruler. :D

Um not quite. They would last a decent amount of time... all forged and as long as the boost isn't too bad... but come on 18g's for a 1000 hp bb blown chevy is WAY over priced if you ask me. Just because the peak numbers are good doesn't mean they are better for wot running in short bursts... most of those are street motors made to run on dog water pump gas. I'd bet most of those would have rediculous off idle tq. Same with a sb 454 making 575 ft lbs and 600 hp... one cam change and the thing would be a tq monster, probably already is a beast down low.
