My emergency rescue on Fordyce Creek trail

Good info and thank you for your rescue efforts.



Avery is about 4 hrs south of the trail in Fresno I thought? Fordyce is up North of him in the Tahoe National Forest.



Lockers and better gearing take strain off your rig plain and simple which will improve reliability. I'm not saying you rig isn't capable as is, it's just I believe some small changes can make a BIG difference in the performance and reliability of your rig. And you got to WH1 and turned around right? You had a lot of trail in front of you that you've never ran if that's the case. With some changes I know you'll get through a hell of a lot easier :beer:

and maybe next year this time I'll be with you.....you know I carry lots of spare parts and tools!


Sure thing about the lockers and gear. I just wanted to illustrate it wasnt a reliability/fab issue. Anyone with a smog system could have had the same thing happen.

Small changes make a huge difference. Even adding the electric fans was night and day. She wouldn't get over 210 during the heat of the day.

I can see that i need to do dual batts, relocated to the cab, ham radio, way bigger alternator, leds/lightbar, legit bumper with a winch, get rid of all smog equipment, no cat converter/short muffler with turndown, more organization/toolbox.

Theres so much more that i can think of. Need to add it to my build thread.

One more thing that crossed my mind...I need on board air. It makes it easier to be towed with the tires pumped up and as i mentioned a guy trying to save me popped a tire with no air. If i had air he could have helped. might have saved me over an hour.

OBA from ViaAir. Works great. I put a 3gal tank near my rear axle and made my rear bumper an air tank. I plumbed lines to each side of the truck in the middle so I can use a stretchy hose on each side.

Most excellent. Just what i want. I want the train horn as well. Thats great for getting attention.
 
Incredible story man, glad you made it out ok. The willingness of everyone to pull together to get everyone home safe and sound is a big reasons I was drawn into off-roading.

I fit a warn power plant feet out in a diy4x abomb front bumper center. Gives me protection, winching and air. Something to look into

Yeah definitely. I think until I go tbi in the winter ill carry an extra carb. that would have enabled me to get out. im going to make a punch list on my build thread of the things I need to do. im excited to build a better mouse trap. even as crappy as things were I marveled at the idea of night wheeling as I saw some guys doing. Looks like a lot of fun but you have to be dialed.

Why? Its stranded me on a trail costing me a $1000 so far....

I like simplification. getting rid of all that crap will achieve that.

Hmm I like that. Anyone with experiance on the new smittybilt compressors? my buddy pumps up 40s with them in a few minutes.

Are york setups a waste of time?
 
Yea the power plant is sweet. Inflates my 38's in minutes and I can run air tools off it too. 90 cfm I believe.

I run dual batteries through a hellroaring isolator combined. Pretty sweet setup. Hit me up if you want more info.

Sorry maybe I didnt post it here. talking on multiple forums.

The charcoal canister pumped the beads into the carb somehow (pressurized gas tank?) Which mechanically locked down the float and plugged some things. I nust see it as if its not there it will never happen again.
 
If I may say, you should carry the stuff to rebuild a carburetor on the trail with you. I have a tackle box I carry that has all my Q-Jet tuning and spare parts (excluding bodies and bases) and can have one torn down and together in a matter of minutes. Find a spare and practice tearing it down and putting it back together. Also, swap rear bolts for studs to make pulling and reinstalling it easier and faster.

We made a trip once and swapped floats a few times in my buddies truck, trying different ones to see what worked best. Once in the middle of an obstacle with a nice crowd gathered because the one in it was causing flooding when it went nose up on a rock.

I have one for my Hollys as well I carry in my Camaro.

Make sure you have two sets of tools. One to work with at home and one assembled and packed away in the truck. Hub nut sockets are about the only things I have to unpack from the truck if I need them.
 
Yeah carbs completely apart. Dug into canister to confirm black stuff. All the pockets in the carb were back filled with the stuff.

Just goes to show you how a strange chain of events can bring you down.

Your a better man than me....I would be hunting down those jackasses that left me there in the first place and making their lives miserable just like they did to you.
Never, never leave anyone....If you don't see them, slow down...Still don't see them, stop....Still don't see them, turn around and find them.

We got back to the parking lot, me a couple of others stayed and helped fix his rig. The rear brakes wouldn't bleed, so I ended up following him home.....Never even thought about leaving him.
The biggest lesson you should learn from this whole experience is......Never go wheelin with people you don't know and trust!!!

The bold is going to happen forsure. You eliminate screw ups and work by not having to swap tools back and forth.

As far as rebuilding the carb goes...When i rebuilt it last time (e4md-electronic version) i had to have dad come over and use a putty knife to get all the electronic crap to stay down while i put the top of the carb on. I honestly dont think i could do it by myself. Thats why i though it would be easier to have a carb ready to go. Good idea on the tackle box. Thats been floating around my head too.

York's are sweet. But your engine has to run. In your case of a stuck thottle, it might not have been the best setup.

Its hard for me not to go ape shizz. Im a hot head and when people go out of their way to make my life miserable. I turn into the punisher.

Hope we dont cross paths on the trail again.

Thats awesome of you. I need more wheeling buddies/friends like you. I too would stay until the job was done!!!
