My Jimmy

Under the passenger side cylinder head, there is a pad where GM stamps the engine codes and a partial VIN,so you can use that to determine the year and if the engine is original to the vehicle..
There are several engine code listing charts on google you can use to pin down which one yours is..

Note:-some engines may have no stampings on that pad--they may have been removed if the engine was rebuilt, and "decked" by a machine to level off the head to block surfaces--or it could be stolen and were ground off--some new OEM short blocks came with a "CE" code, which means "complete engine"..

The casting numbers near the bellhousing identify the cubic inch only, there is also a "clock" cast into the area behind the oil sending unit that shows when it was made..

One easy was to identify a 400 small block is its the only small block to use a harmonic balancer that has a section of the outer ring "missing" ,(all others have a solid ring)--and an externally balanced flywheel or flex plate..

Not sure how to share with everyone my project so I thought I would tell it here

1977 GMC High Sierra Jimmy

When I bought it it was mostly stripped of molding, carpets and the seats and belts were there but not bolted down. The previous owner had started to rattle can the outside with cheap bed liner, had put 35's on and a 4" lift. The seats are original red and in near perfect condition but the dash, door panels, gauges were cracked and in sad shape. The cruise control, A/C, heater and shift indicator along with a bunch of other stuff did not work. Lastly the exhaust runs 12" past the headers and turns towards the outside of the vehicle just behind the front tires.

What I've done and What I'm doing

I've removed the heater/AC system, the cruise control system and front bumper.

I've nearly finished modifying the electrical system. I'm pulling nearly all the wiring and replacing it with S/O cord.
I've ran the wiring for the front of the vehicle through the fenders and and front clip so that as much as possible the wiring can not be seen in the engine compartment.
I've ran the alternator wiring right back through the fire wall and have it coming back into the engine compartment just above the passenger side valve cover.
I've ran the starter wiring also into the cab and out the fire wall just above the starter near the bell housing.
I've relocated the battery in the rear of the bed on the floor behind the fender well where the old fuel fill cover was.
I've relocated the fuel fill behind the passenger side tail light.
I've fabricated sheet metal fender extensions and fender wall caps in the rear of the bed.
I've built a custom front bumper that I folded out of a single sheet of steel.
I've removed the front marker lights.

Thanks for reading I would love any input , good or bad
