My mom needs a new car... ahhhh

Ok.... my mom needs a new car. As much as I think she should go K5 that ain't gonna happen. She's being cheap... I hate to say it but she is. She thinks a good cheap car now is the way to go when it's a waste of cash to buy some piece of trash like a Kia that'll fall apart in 2 years... I keep telling her spend more now and get something decent because in the long run it'll be smarter. Anyhow she's got $14,000 and thinks something like a 2002 Grand Prix will fall out of the sky for that much. When I was done laughing I told her fat chance and now am in the hunt for a used car because there ain't no way she's going to find some car brand spanking new car with all the stuff she wants on it for that cost. So what do you all recommend as a good used car? Needs to be something from say 95 or newer, auto tranny, 4 seats and so on... she's not a truck fan but I think if I found something for her needs maybe she'd sway... thanks in advance!

gee Steph for 14k around here you can get quite a nice Grand Am, even a buick Regal- even an Olds Aurora is a nice car- best I say it my friend has a Taurus-- its a 96- its not too shabby- for 14k in Vt, you can get just about anything damn even like a 95 Suburban! LOL

Have her check out the Oldsmobile line.
G.M. canceld the Olds product, I think they'll cut 'em out around 2005/6 ish. Poor sales and too meny branches, G.M. has been tring to combine all of their product lines for years.
Don't think for a minute these cars are "your Grandpas Olds." They are clean, well built cars, with excelent reputatins. Also, any G.M. dealer will honor the Olds warranty.
I'm pretty sure, Oldsmobile is stacking on awesome rebates and extended warranties (5 yr on 2001 and up) to stimulate buyers. (probably want to double check that).

I've driven a bunch of the new Oldsmobiles and they are really nice rides.

Ofcource, Pontiac Grand Prix are nice too. Get one used with some of the warranty left, drive it for a bit and make a note of anything thats wrong with it. Then get it fixed up before the warranty runs out.

No Fords.... everyone we (and my grandparents) have owned has been awful. I'm going to look at Olds tomorrow. We can't get anything new (2002) here for $14k... lots of used stuff but my mom wants new. Like I said fat chance for that......

If she really wants a new car, she might as well use that money for a really good down payment on one and have all the bells and whistles and warrentee.

so it comes with 10 years, 100,000 miles warranty... what good does that do you, if you've always got it in the shop for repairs?

14,000 dollars is enough for her to say buy a late-70's-mid 80's suburban, throw decent axles under it ( or start with a 2wd) put new engine, transmission, overdrive, reargears, plush interior, modern looking paintjob ( metalic fleck something-or-rather) pay someone to do all that, and still have the better part of 6000-8000 bucks leftover... in a suburban, toting a new 454, with proerly tuned carb/Fuel injection, and an overdrive, she'll get good gas mileage ( I get 13, with no OD, and a carb) she'll get indestructability in an accident, large spacious interior, and if hers rides like mine, a nice soft cadillac type ride... ( the 454 helps the front springs a lot) not only that, but it'll last forever, ( unless they salt the roads there, and you don't have a thick undercoating on it)

just my know-it-all opinion on the matter...

She can get a pretty nice Integra, or acura 3.0 CL for that much, probably about a 96 or 97. I was looking at the 3.0 myself a while ago, and thats what they are going for. Really nice cars too.

Ah no... those are horrible. At work 3 seperate folks have them and all hate then passionately....

I found a 98 Camaro today. It's got 57,000 miles on it, white, auto tranny and a bunch of cool toys for $10,000.... but it has a warrenty.... so I will try to get her to look at that. Hopefully she'll buy it... we almost got a Mustang today but the sales guy was so obnoxius we left. I wanted to run him over... he actually chased us in the parking lot after the car... sheesh....

Problem solved she got a Civic. it's an 98... we looked at the new and the loaded ones were way more then $14k... this one has 46k miles, power everything, tinted windows, cd player extremely clean and a warrenty, 36 months or 50,000 miles.... so all in all she's happy despite I thought the Camaro was way better but oh well..!

My mom is looking for a new car also. She is looking for an over seas car. I would say if your looking at acura pop the hood and it says nissan right on the top of the engine. You can pick up a used maxima or altama for cheap cash. They last forever. My mom has a 94 altama with 170,000 mi on it. The only thing she does is change the oil and fluids in it. The only thing it needs after that many mi is a set of struts. I personaly would go nissan.

Sorry to burst your bubble but if you open the hood on an Acura its gonna say Honda on it. If you open the hood on an Infiniti you might find some Nissan scribblings though.

Hey Steph,
If I remember right your in Sac right? Anyways I moved from there about 6 months ago. I got a Grand Am at Elk Grove Pontiac about a year ago for 13,500 last year. It's got a 3,4 V6, 4dr, auto, traction control, power locks and windows and handels like nobodys buisness and the power is damn good. Hope this helps.
