i finally got to working on my 14 bolt ff. im going to be replacing the shoes on it and have yet to start. any suggestions? i have never messed with a FF before? and what was the u joint you need to connect to a 1/2 ton pickup? 1350 or something

also where would i purchase u bolts and plates. thanks guys should be up and running by the end on the month

The ujoint you need is #447 from napa.

Are you just changing out your pads or doing a disc conversion? Either way, you gotta get new seals and bearings for the hubs, I don't have those part numbers off my head. Don't forget to get the 6 prong 1/2" drive spindle socket, seal puller and snap ring pliers.. Mine wasn't leaking when I bought it but I rebuilt it anyway when I went the disc route. Man, I hate replacing drum shoes.

Replacing the shoes is not that hard of a job. Just like any other drum brake setup. If you are worried about messing it up, just do one side at a time. The only special tools you will need are, the spindle socket and a torque wrench (for the bearing preload). You can get by without the torque wrench though.

If it were me though, I'd do a disc conversion (actually I did). If you are replacing everything (drums, shoes, springs, wheel cylinders)...the cost is about the same. But if you're only doing the shoes..it may not be worth it yet.

I'm assuming you've seen the bible over at pirate?

i think he means that a brake job on a drum brake 14 bolt is a PITA due to the fact you have to remove the axles, hubs THEN the drums, and i personally wouldn't consider this "like any other brake job" as most you just remove the wheels, drums comes off.

yes replacing the brake shoes and parts are the same, but the procedure to GETTING to them is quite abit more work.

another reason disk brakes are so much nicer :D
