Well, I just sold my 4runner for this jimmy. alot roomier. It seemed to be a bit neglected the last 6 yrs but in great shape. Had lots of options and only 75k. Its a 1990 jimmy. So onto the maint. catchup and customizing. My desire is to go with 33" and a regular spring lift of 2-3". Cant wait.

My question is though it came with the locking diffential rear axle. I guess this is the gov loc. Can i throw it out and replace with a truetrac or something or are those case funny to swap parts in?

You don;t swap parts into a G80, unless they are G80 parts.
If you want a different locker you will need to get a full replacement carrier. Easy though.

So then with the gov loc Im screwed if I want to change it for a full locker or something else then. Hate to swap another 10 bolt in when I can just pull a 14ff for the same but a 14ff would be a bit overkill for what I plan this vehicle for. Maybe Ill just do it for when its thrashed l8r in life and I will start wheelin it.

you can replace the gov-lock with another locker or limited slip but you have to get a full carrier replacement. as in you cant put a lunch box locker in its place without first swapping in an open carrier. the housings on the axles are physically the same so the G80 could be replaced with a limited slip, lockers such as a detroit, or a standard open diff.

If you are only going to run 33" tires i would keep the gov lock. With smaller tires they really aint as bad as some here make them out to be. Change the fluid , keep it clean It should hold up fine. if it does blow then you can do a 14 bolt swap if you want. but I would not sink a bunch of money on lockers and LSDs into a ten bolt. Unless you know how to set up the gears ECT.

cool. then ill leave it alone for now til it breaks. sounds like then i can put in a truetrac with not to many issues right? thanks for the info

Hey, I like the K5, the color almost matches your step side!

:DYea that was the best part grey like my truck. Though it looks so small next to my truck with such skinny tires. they really do look awkward with 31x10.5 on em. I cant wait to put a mild lift on it with wider tires. Got to wait till my holiday check comes to afford it though. One more month to figure out what I want to do.

what are some opinions on this...... I was thinking 3" springs rear with 2" springs front w/zero rates so I can get clearance for a bigger tie rod.

Well just finished the basic lift job with tires. took 6hr of install for springs, shocks, and tires. Alot quicker then last time but I havent done any fine tuning yet with steering and pinion angles. Went with a 4" rear spring and a 3" front spring. I was hoping to avoid teh pinion angle problem with only a 4" lift but i guess not. Seems even worse than my truck was. the ujoint is really maxed it looks like and alot of vibration too. Anyhow I have a HAD drive shaft slip yoke style left over from my truck when i went SYE I just have to have shortened. My thoughts though was that would even make the angle worse withy the cv adding length and then angle. Looks like im in for some pretty big shims. Anyone use this similar setup? what degree shims do you use? still need to get on the new tierod, draglink, SS brake lines, Alignment, and drive shaft/ angle worked out. I also just got done installing a new crate engine with a bunch of mods like cam , intake, TBI bored out, chip, dist, ect.... Doesnt seem to bad with the 3.73 and OD in it but might go to 4.11 soon and get rid of the gov loc worry. give ya a few pics too.

Slap a 3* shim in and be done with it.

I know you have done this before....but are you sure the ubolt nuts are tightened correctly? That will give a vibration too.

not sure about correctly. i tighten criss cross then re tighten to torque in same fashion. not sure if thats good or not. but just by looking at the pinion u joint it looks pretty severe from what it should be.
