Hi everyone. My name's Eric and I used to be a Jeeper. I still like them, but two problems came up. I had the third kid and with me, the wife the kids and the dog, there was NO WAY to fit us all in. Plus, every time I read JP Magazine, it talked about swaps and what was it swappin g in? CHEVY! Engine, Trans, Transfer case, everything was Chevy. So I thought "I should just BUY a Chevy and get all the good parts from the start. So I waited until I saw just the right one.
A 1972 GMC Jimmy with a 454 engine, a TH 400 Trans, a 205 transfer case, a 14 bolt full floating rear axle, and 8 lug disks swapped onto the Dana 44 front. All spring lift, no body lift. Its a freakin' monster!

But there was enough not working to make going to the junkyard for parts on my to-do list. The parking brake cables are too short and not connected. Most of the gauges dont work. I'm leaking some coolant from the thermostat housing and a tiny hole in the radiator. T-handle on shell doesnt work. HVAC control broken. So nothing major, but some fun stuff to work on.

I am about to try to attach pics. Thanks tRustyK5!

and the engine

It worked! I'm not that great on a computer, so I wasn't sure. Here is a photo of the engine. And I have some concerns about how its mounted, so if anybody has experience, please let me know. it has the cross member like a U underneath, with just one bolt going into each side of the engine. Shouldnt there be a third mount in the rear of the engine? Just on one side? I have been looking at the manuals, but its hard to tell.

You must post some more pics! Can you show us what style motor mounts are on your K5. I'm using the stock small block style with my bbc and the mounts bolt to the engine with three bolts and then one bolt goes from the engine crossmember into the motor mount bolted to the engine.

On a manual truck, the only other mount used is below the transfer case adapter. I can't tell you for sure what an auto truck uses for additional mounts but someone on here will be able to.

Really eager to see more pics. Can you post a few showing your firewall clearance near the heads. I'm always interesting in seeing fittment of bbc's.

Welcome to the board btw!

here's a photo of the outside and the backseat I already had on the computer. I'll break out the digital camera and take some more of the outside and the engine mounts soon. Thanks.

Does it have a http://diy4x.com crossmember for motor mounts? Looks kind of like a U with DOM for the mounting points.

Almost forgot - Hella nice ride!

Welcome to the jungle!

Your reason is the same as mine (With the exception of me wanting a Toyota FJ40 LC :D).

Cool!
Were in Cali are you?
The U shape you describe sounds like the factory SBC crossmember. Shold be fine just not too many aftermarket or upgrades available for that style. Upgrading to a DIY4X crossmember would shurly keep that BBC in place for life :D
Look forward to some more pics!

Sweet.....!!!

Another houndstooth interior! :saweet:

That's a clean looking rig, and from the sounds of it you truly have the luxury of getting to play with "small" repair items as the major items have already been installed and completed. It is an enviable position to be in.

Pull that top off it, and enjoy!

That's a beautiful rig. And,as Greg said, some of the major, relatively standard upgrades are already there. It looks great!Happy to have you here. The guys in this section of the site have so much experience with these rigs that you'll have no trouble geting help if you need it.Enjoy!-Allen

Hi guys. Sorry it took me so long. Here are a couple more photos, including the two engine mounts. This weekend I'll take her out and get some exterior photos.
The first two are the right and left side engine mounts, which, based on what I've read here, are the original engine mounts that were on the 350 and are now attached to the 454. No clamshell design, even though the 454 engine is a '75 and came with them (I would have tried to switch them myself. Then again, maybe the previous owner did try and it wouldn't work? Anybody try that?).

Thanks for the suggestion on DIY4X. I like their motor mounts a lot and will probably buy it. Does anyone already have that mount with a 454 installed though? Is it wide enough? I think the 454 is a few inches wider than the 350, right?
There's also a photo of the rear brake adjustable valve, which I am still trying to get adjusted correctly.
And the last photo is one of the two parking brake brackets my brother-in-law and I relocated (moved down) so the parking brake would work again (it wouldn't reach with the lift and wasn't connected when I bought it). We also swapped in the longer, bolt-in, parking cables from a '75 van so that they would be long enough to handle the drop when off-roading.
Thanks! I'll post those exteriors after Thanksgiving.

having trouble with photos...

Where are the photos that you're trying to display?

They need to be on a website somewhere, NOT just linked to a path on your hard drive.

You can use Photobucket, or even the CK5 photo gallery to upload the photos.....then right-click and copy the "Properties" information into your message. If you use the little photograph icon in the menu bar, you can imbed the actual photo, and not just a link to it.

Does that help?
