Decided to make a stinger tire carrier for the k5. I used .12 wall HREW and a couple bushings and mounts from Kert. To hold the tire on I used the spare tire mount from a 95 burb with some little modifications. I haven't decided how I want to keep it in place so for now the tow strap will do. I used a little northern tool pipe bender/kinker to do the bends and a 120 Lincoln mig for the welds. Still needs a real paint job, that was mostly just to prevent rust.

looks good... thats the style I'm gonna do...

what size tire is that?

looks nice, once paul is done with mine he'll get to his is what he really means1 LOL

keep us updated

what are you going to do to keep the tire in place, i am planning on building one like this but i cannot decide on how to keep it in place.

Its a 38.5x15.5x16.5 tsl, wouldn't want to lift it up to a swing out style, that thing weights a ton.

hmmmm, same size as me... and absolutely, no swing out for me... I figure it'll make a nice step up for my ancient knees when getting in the back... :haha:

I'm curious on the securing ideas too... I was thinking of something like Dontoe's, but with 2 attachments, as opposed to one...

Do you mean how am I going to keep the rack up or the tire on the rack?

I thought about using lug studs and bolting the tire on to the rack, but I decided to weld a piece of metal to the rack with a hole in it for a bolt with a hook on the end and a big wing nut. I got the bolt out of an old burb we had back in the day (it held the tire in place) figured I would use it eventually. There is a picture of the wing nut part up top

As for holding the rack up I cut the head off a bolt and welded it to the bumper in the middle of the 2 bushing mounts. Then I am thinking I will use some sort of chain or solid link on each side of the rack coming into the bolt in the middle, then use a wing nut to hold it to the bumper. I am not sure how I will do it yet and the truck is in the shop right now for some engine work. I will get some more pictures when it gets back and I figure it out

I am thinking something like Dontoes as well but 2 links coming to one attachment point on the bumper. I think with chain it will bounce around too much

pretty sure everyone was talking about carrier to bumper....

here's Dontoe's...

I figured I'd do it like his, but instead of one center one, put one at either end of that tube...

I remember looking at his back in the day when I got the idea to make the carrier, pretty sure I have those pictures saved somewhere

I am thinking something like this. The pink in the center is the bolt I welded on there and the wing nut, the green hopefully will be one part with a flexible bendy part in the center

I went to home depot to look for some links to use but couldn't really find what I was looking for, I will try tractor supply tomorrow. Hopefully I will have the truck back tomorrow as well so I can come up with something to get it finished

Alright so this is what I am going to try. I almost got a link like the one from harbor freight above but they didn't have one long enough that wasn't incredibly heavy or expensive. These should work just fine though they aren't as beefy or clean looking. I also decided not to use the wing nut, mostly because its kinda tacky. Not sure I can get it done tonight (might have to go fishing) but will see.

The gold part I am going to cut the threads off and weld to the bumper, the black thing is a little d ring shackle thingy, and the links have 3/8" bolts we will see how it works out.

No offense but that turn buckle / d-ring set up looks like it would have a lot of slop in it. Maybe enough for the tire to hit the body? At one time I had a DPI tire carrier and that set up seems to work well. You might consider another crossbar a little lower using a single beefy bar with hiems and hitch pins.

Here's what I came up with for my drop down carrier.

The higher and closer to parallel you can make the link the less leverage there is against it. The stinger can be removed like a receiver hitch to lower the tailgate. Or you could remove the link pin to lower the carrier to get in the back.

That is the only problem I found with the drop down carrier is access thru the back window. The carrier needs to be pulled to remove anything from the back. And one pin is bad enough to have to pull, but two or more would be a real PAIN.

That's a 38" tire in the picture for reference.

Yeah I thought about that, might have to change it but will see. The body isn't in the best shape anyway so I don't care as long as its not banging around too much
