My "Official" Stepside Restoration Thread and LS Swap 2021

Hey wow thanks fellas. I'll have to do that soon. But how do I open them? Would I have to get a knob and cable from the junkyard too, or is there a way to rig them up? Thanks again.

The knob is built into the vent panel, you can see it in the pictures, you just pull the knob out and it opens the vent. Push the knob in and it closes, it's pretty obvious once you see them in person.

I found some weird stuff while going over the truck today.

It appears that my traction bar bump stop was functioning at the dunes:

This lead me to then notice a nice crack opened back up right near there:

So obviously I need to drill, grind, and weld up the crack, but how should I handle the factory bump stop bracket? I know it'll have to be clearanced but should I get some sort of actual bump stop in there while I'm at it?

Can you just cut the bolt off or flip it around?

As for the bump stop, I vote air bumps! :thumb:

Do you have a welder at your place? I can always throw mine in chevy blazer and bring it up.

What's the black spot too right in the first pic?

Paint and Grinding dust.

I know the weld doesn't look ultra clean but its functional inside and out.

I had to mark it just to make sure we were talking about the same thing. Maybe it's nothing in real life, but it looks like a black hole from here.

Oh thaaaat black thing. Yup its a hole... its from back in the day when I welded up another crack in the frame and blew through. Gotta love flux core...

Why not just knock the two rivets out and take the bump stock bracket out of the way?

How can I plate the frame right there? There's a lot of compound curves that would be very hard replicate with a piece of steel.

That sucks you're still having frame issues after all that work, not to mention thst you don't really beat on it anymore.

That truck must've had a really hard life before you got ahold of it.

Have you pulled up your floor and welded the inside? You may want to clean of a larger area to ensure there is no further cracking.

I say weld it as best you can and drive it.

I really think that my truck was jumped hard by the PO. That same shock mount was cracked when I bought it and all the leaf springs were cracked.

I welded the inside too, didn't have to pull the bed floor but it was tight. Its as good as it can get and I'm sure it'll be fine until the next time at the dunes when I hit some whoops a lot harder than intended.
