I dont know if I ever posted this or not but here is my 02' KTM 400 EXC dirt bike, My "other" dirt toy. I bought it new in 02'. Its a duel sport bike registered for dirt and street, although it does'nt see much street. It is a sleeper actually, I did a 450 big bore kit on it. They call it a "big bore kit" but its actually a long stroke crank to gain the extra cylinder volume which is better for gaining torque. It has a long stroke 450 crank from the SX model, a 12.5 to 1 piston out of the SX model, the SX (motocross model) cam. Its beed re-jetted, has stock head pipe with a FMF silencer. Im running a GPR under bar Steering Damper.

The last machine shop I was at was a Hi Tech coating company. I had Z Racing, the shop that did the hop up kit send me the new piston and barrel. We coated the top of the piston with a Thermal barrier coating to keep the heat out of the piston and in the combustion chamber.

Also we coated the barrel with a Moly type Hard coating. It is a hard coating but it also has micro pores in the coating, it works like the honing swirls do in a regular bore for oil retention. The micro Pores hold oil, plus the Moly coating has built in lubricity in the coating. The rings seated just fine. It has gobs of power. I rode my buds 04' 450 and my bike feels faster to me with more Torque.

It has a Baja Designs duel sport kit. I bought universal mirrors for the street, I take them off for dirt riding. I did a Race Tech bladder kit in the rear shock resivior. The bladder kit replaced the aluminum piston in the resivior. It smoothed the shock out a ton. I put bark busters on it with built in blinkers. Im going to replace them with better bark busters, and I will bolt on aftermarket blinkers. It has an Enduro Engineering case saver block. An SDG TALL seat.

I had a IMS desert tank but it cracked to I just put the stock tank back on. It has a 03' front fender, the factory 02' fender looks stupid, has a crappy shape to it. The 03' looks like a regular Motocross fender. Im not legal in the rear, the blinkers distance spread, but I have NEVER broke one off going down, and yes I have been down many times. There suposed to be 15 inches apart.

I put a dead man kill switch on it so it cant be started when parked. I need to get a regular key type ignition for it, but the dead man works fine for now. Put a pipe guard as you can see in the one pic, all the holes were my mod, I dig the way it came out.

I ride it to work from time to time. I wear my dirt bike helment and goggles, a Alpine Star Body armor full protection upper body suit. It has a two chest plates, elbow/fore arm guards, shoulder cup protection, and a full top to bottom spine protection plate. I wear my knee/shin guards, Road race Dainese roar racing boots, ICON road racing glooves that cover the lower half of my forearms.

I get more looks and attention then when I had my Harley Softtail, and kids totally dig it. I can tell you riding a dirt bike on the street is a boyhood dream come true. As a kid all I wanted to do was ride mt dirt bike to school, to here, to there, everywhere! Now I get to :D. Oh, and chicks dig it. Its WAY more fun then my Harly ever was riding on the street.

Cool guys! I thought no one replied to this thread. I used to ride a Honda 400 TRX Quad. I had it tricked out quite a bit. Even raced the Legendary Elsinore Grand Prix made famous in the "On Any Sunday" movie. Dont have any digi camera pics I can post up though. Cool, keep um coming.

Those are some nice rides. I've been looking into getting myself a dual sport bike to use as a commuter and right now I've got my choices narrowed down to the Suzuki DRZ400sm and the Kawasaki KLR650.

I've always wanted one of those and they seem to go for relatively little... are they actually capable of anything or more just putting around the field?
