which is actually the wife's, doesn't seem to be running right. It's been on my mind, but i really noticed it last night after having driven my K5 a lot recently.

It's a 91 Ford (i know, i know :o) Explorer 4x2 and bone stock. V6 4.0L with the normal 4 speed auto OD transmission. Going down the freeway at 75MPH the RPMs show 3000-3500. When I shift from OD to 3rd there is no change in RPMs. The passing gear is there, b/c if i accelerate it will drop down and give me more power. if take my foot off the gas and coast the RPM will drop to the 1500 range or so in OD and then i shift to 3rd, they will jump up.

Is this normal or what? I have not done any maintenance to the trans since we have owned it which has been several years. It currently has 105000 miles as far as I know (5 digit odometer).

Thanks,
Louie

well my wifes car does the same and its not a good sign to me as i just droped 1400 bucks in a trany but in my pickup i run like 2800 rs at 75 mine is going back the car is going back to the trny guy as soon as he has time

my dads bronco 2 does exactly the same! i noticed it when i was supposed to go to my friends, a 50 or so mile, i ended up not going cause at 75 mph, the engine is doing the same as you. and and when i let off the gas it drops to like 1500 and i push the gas very light it moves a little then back to 3000 to 3500 rpm range. i told my dad abt it, he didnt care because he bought a new car. for work transporation. and use the bronoco locally and hunting, offroading. i took it to my friends ernie( transmission guy) , he say might be overdrive clutches burnt out or overdrive band broked? something like that. needs to be rebuilt.

My buddy had a '94 Ford Ranger 2wd with a 3.0 auto that did the same exact thing.

Man, I don't have the funds to do this crap. At least 3rd gear works fine... Albeit the money I'm losing on the gas mileage will quickly add up to the cost of a rebuild, thanks to current gas prices. Either way I'm $crewed. lol.

Thanks for the info guys.
